Subject: Height of D17 vs. D19 narrow front

Does anyone know what the difference in height is between a D17 narrow front and a D19 narrow front.  I have a D17 one here that I was thinking I could put on my D19, but want to know how much it is going to drop the front end.   Thanks.

Three inches taller on the D19 is what my memory banks tell me.

I think the Dr is about right. All I know is they are enough taller that when you see a 19 with a 17 front you know it imediately.

Ok, next question.   I have a nephew that does tool and die/edm work.   Would it be possible to make an extension for the D17 narrow front, and also an extension for the steering shaft where it connects to the bottom of the bolster, and then get some long bolts to bolt it all together, or would that be putting too much stress on the threaded holes etc. and would end up being prone to a short life and failure.

As long as the spacer was machined with proper shoulders/lips to keep things in place and use Gr8 bolts, I see no problem.

Chuck, You may be on to something. I've also got a d17 narrow front I've been wanting to put under my 19. Let me know what you come up with.

I am also interested in what you may come up with as I would like a narrow front for one of my 19's someday and have a few for the 17 laying around.

Well, I will talk to my nephew and see if he's interested.  I'm sure once he has it all programmed and figured out, making duplicates would be easy.    We'd all be missing the D19 narrow front weight but that's another bridge we can cross later.

If he has access to a CNC it should be no problem once you get the original prototype figured out. I'll buy one if it's not too expensive.

The front weight could be machined out of a solid piece of steel but it's going to be kind of complicated with some of the radius's involved. A better option may be to fab the shape up with plate steel and fill it with punch slugs before you seal it up to get the weight right. I know that's how some towmotor counterweights are made.

Well I wanted more room in the shed and had time today, so I put the 17 narrow front pedestal on on my new to me 19.
With the little 16.9X34's on the rear it sits fairly level to slightly nose down. Next time I get it out I will take some better pictures. Still hope to find the correct pedestal and weight for a 19 some day.

How much are those front weights worth? I bought one on an auction last year where the guy had a 18o diesel. He told me that he had bought a d19 brand new and had traded it on the 180 when that was new. Only thing he had left was the front weight for when he put the narrow front on it. Weight is kind of neat and you don't see alot of them

I didnt know that the 19 took different front weights than17 i thought they both used the 4 stack weights.

Only the narrow front 19's used that weight inside the grill shell to help keep the nose planted. If you wanted more weight that is where the stack weights came in.

On the 19's the weight Matt shows fits inside the grill and you wouldn't notice it unless you looked for it

Matt's weight would fit here on a 19

Just the information I needed.  Bought a D19 with no front end.  It's sitting up on blocks, have a spare D17 narrow front in the scrap pile.  I'll dig it out and us it to at least get it home.

Matt, that tractor and weight look like the what I have, or had, tractor that is.  I still have the weight.
The weight is off of a D19 narrow front. 
It mounts between the front steering casting and radiator shell/grill, and will go on all the D14 thru D17's. Makes for a real solid 5 mph bumper.

Travis, I would love to see some pics from the side. Is there any room between the top of the tire and the frame to add a larger front tire to help offset the difference?

Good weather here today, so I got them out and took some pictures for you.

Back side showing different hieght in rubber. Left to right is a 19 with newer 18.4X34, 19 with wore 16.9X34, and 17 with 16.9X28

There does look like room to go up a tire size or two, maybe more if you don't plan on going through any mud...

We used to have a D17 towline tractor, that we had a local blacksmith modify for 18.4R42 tires. He also built an extension that went between the front of the D17, and the narrow front end. I want to say it was 10" or 12" long, with a shaft coupler in between. As a towline tractor, I'm sure you can imagine the stress' put on the narrow front end, pushing through mud, and going through ditches, never had a problem with the extension.
