Looking for a 280 plus horse tractor for next growing season.  My rest off my fleet are Allis's but not sure about what the big tractor will be.  How relaible are the 4w-305's?  Are any of the parts common with other tractors?  Similar PD tranny as a 7080?  Are parts available?

They are pretty good tractors, but when they get high houred they start having engine trouble.  Dad used to get one in the shop once in a while and toward the end, when it had around 9000 hours, it kept throwing the crank pulley, and in turn needed a new crank.  Owner decided to get rid of it, but it did serve him well for a lot of years.  There is a beatiful 305 at Isaacson Implement in Nerstrand MN.

They had better engine life than the 8550's tractors due to the way the pump is set.

When they were still available new, the local John Deere dealer told me they were one of the best 4WD's built. We never had any trouble with ours.

Hager, do you know much about that one at the dealers lot, like price and so forth? Do they have a web site that might have a picture of it? Thanks, Darrel

If its in decent shape, for the price you cant really go wrong. They are good strong pullers, standard with pto and fenders, nice cabs for the bigger man, well laid out, easy to service, not real loud, not real hard on fuel etc. JMHO Trev.

They are almost 30 year old tractors now--------so condition and maintenance will have a lot to do with it's future life.  Make sure the injection pump hasn't been messed with-------have the dealer put it on a dyno.  At full load, the rpm should only be 2400.

I'm glad to hear the personal reports.  I wanted that tractor to be very reliable and the lower engine rpm and redesigned drive shaft arrangement was supposed to do that.

Edit: Yup, it should have been 30, not 20.

Mark makes a great point, get it dynoed at proper rpm, I'd stay clear of one if it put out more than 260 pto unless it is a cherry unit at a good price, Trev.

427435, I guess I've kind of gathered from your posts that you were in Allis engineering, and sounds as if you had a pretty big hand in the 4W305, huh? IMHO ya must of done all right. I've driven a few of em, but never put one to work. People that I know who've had em, seemed to like em. I sure wouldn't mind having one. Darrel

Was it cheaper to redesign the drivetrain than to beef up the bottom end on the engine?

We didn't really change anything (that I can remember) between the 8550 and 4W-305 drivetrain.  The drivetrain guys had gotten very conservative after the 190 XT and D21 II drivetrain issues.  By the time the 8550 had come along, farmers had learned, however, not to see how big an implement they could put behind a tractor at 3-1/2 mph.  And the tillage tools were changing to higher speed implements anyway.

The engine, however, was capable of the same power at a lower rpm.  This of course raised torque input to the tranny------which is what the drivetrain people worried too much about.  After looking at the 12 liter engine problems that 2550 rpm caused and the lack of any transmission problems, it was decided to recalibrate the engine to 2400 rpm.

I left in the fall of 1984, so I didn't really get to see many warranty claims on them (one of the things I monitored closely on all tractors).  However, I felt they would be very good tractors with a great cab on them.

I went to Isaacson Imp web site and checked out that 4W 305. That bad boy would fit right into my plan. Darrel
