got the shift tower back in place without the shift lever in but i'm not sure  it's right. should we install the tower with the shift lever installed first? It was a real pain getting the reverse fork set if its right.
thanks

I've always done it without the shifter in the tower.

It's been a few years now, but I seem to remember putting the forks (and the gear) in reverse before installing and then using a big screwdriver to line up the slots to neutral before inserting the shifter..

If you can shift in and out of all the gears you are probably all right.
I'm sure there are several ways to do it.  I did one a couple of weeks ago and used this proceedure.  I start with all 3 shift forks in neutral.  Then move the tower into 2nd gear.  It will be nearly in line with the reverse fork.  Then I used a big screw driver and put the transmission into 2nd gear.  Then position the small reverse idler gear so its fork groove lines up with the fork groove on the 1 and 2nd gear slider.  Then lower the shift tower and guide the reverse fork into the reverse gear idler by starting it through the left side of the groove and into the 1 and 2nd gear slider.   Once the tower is in place I put in 2 bolts to hold the tower in place and then use a big screw driver through the shifter hole and put the transmission in neutral.  I put in the pole and put in the retainer cup and snap ring and shift through all the gears to see that it is going in and out of all the gears.  You will probably need to rock the tractor a little to line up the gears so it will go in.   If everything seems all right I put in the rest of the bolts and tighten them.
I know that Sandy Lake imp.  has detailed instructions on how to do it.  Hope this helps.
