My dad bought one, it is just a lawn tractor, not a heavy duty one either. It does turn sharp, it's loud, and it operates easy enough.
It's Orange and says Allis-Chalmers though

I bought one and never used it. If I had to do it over I would not have bought it and used that money toward real orange. It does say Allis Chalmers though. I would be glad to sell it for what I pd.

My brother is a Simplicity dealer and the familey buisness has been AC since 1937.
He said the same thing, he doesn't want anything to do with them.
I have a 716 that is going strong.

What I noticed first was the CHEAP deck!!! And it only had ONE single gauge wheel on each side!! Our simplicity has a full width roller and mowers like a dream!! How can you mower with a chincy single gauge wheel on uneven ground?? They looked cheap. Said to put AC logos on them. Ryan

That cheap Deck is a murray deck. The 4 wheel steer models are a Murray with a Simplicity hood on them. Briggs owns murray and used murray parts to build them and yes there was also a Snapper version.  The standard model is a Simplicity regent minus the "floating" deck.  They don't hold a candle to a 700 series but then you have to consider the 700 and 900 series were probably $3000+ over 25 years ago and these new ones are only about $1900 in todays money.  You're really comparing them to a an AC608 LT or something along those lines.

If they wanted to gain my respect, they shoud have made an A-C version of the Prestige or the Legacy XL. The ones out now are  what they are: a cheap mower at a cheap price. A slap in the face to all past A-C mowers.

Well I tell you anyway, Allis Chalmers is dead and they should let the dead R.I.P.

I'm with Jeff. AC died Dec 1985. Everything since then is just imitation.
The AC mowers are Simplictity, as has been previously stated.
Simplicity built a fine product back in the 60s, up until a few years ago.
AC actually bought Simplicity and built the plant over in Lexington, SC.
That didn't last long, then Simplicity went back under their own management(with help here and there)
Simplicity was bought by Briggs and Stratton(which was once a fine engine manufacturer, but has since turned into another "corporate cesspool" with investors from several different interests, just jockying to try to make numbers).
B&S will fold up like a wet burrito in a few years, just like Murray and several others have.
Mower they have out with AC stickers on it is a Simplicity or Murray discount(price point) unit, and does not even have the "better" features that B&S puts on the "simplicity" branded mowers that they are still making. sad, because Simplicity was still making a good product until then. Looked at the Broadmoor series a few years ago, right before the buyout. Glad I waited now. Guess the 1986 Snapper YT-16 will have to do "one more year" (i've been saying that for the last 8-10. LOL!).

I bought one in sept of 2009. (42" deck) I have been satisfied with it.
It is a lawn tractor, not a garden tractor, so in my opinion it should not be compared to garden tractors from the past.
The tractor and chassis is the same as a Simplicity Regent and Snapper LT-125.
Yes the deck is a Murry deck, so it hangs off the tractor and does not float on rollers like the simplicity decks.
I have made several personnal upgrades to mine and in my opinion it has enhanced the overall performance of the machine.

Generally speaking you get what you pay for.  Pay $1000 and you get a 1000 dollar mower.  Pay 3 grand and you'll find out why it's three times the cost of the cheap one.  That said I have both a cheap one and a more expensive mower.  Each has it's place.

I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY MADE IT LOOK LIKE A CUB CADET. THE HOOD IS EVEN WHITE THEY SHOULD HAVE MOLDED THE PLASTIC HOOD LIKE A WD, D SERIES OR 190 & MADE IT ORANGE & EVERY TRUE AC FAN WOULD BE AFTER ONE , NO MATER HOW IT WAS BUILT. MY CUB CADET ISN,T ANYTHING TO BRAG ABOUT EITHER.

Remember guys, there will never, ever, be another Allis Chalmers tractor. Garden, farm, or otherwise. All of us live in the past (and that's not mean't to be derogatory at all, I relish it), when it comes to AC. I see it as honoring my grandfather, & I'm sure all of you feel the same way about your old machines. Even though the modern AC lawnmower does have an AC decal, it means nothing unless you pack it away for 50 years unused. I guess it could be neat to have something brand new that says AC that one can use every week, just remember that it's not continuing the brand. It's just a gimmick. BUT -these are just my opinions & I could be wrong. You can look at the other side of the coin & consider the new mowers a way to introduce others to the AC name. I just hope they don't equate workmanship from the new to the old.

John Deere is the only company that builds a good garden tractor anymore, but you will pay handsomely for one.

You may want to take a closer look at the John Deere before you make that comment. The high grade of John Deere is pretty good but anything less than there most expensive model is a pile. My Dad bought a 214 back in 1981 still going strong very good tractor, bought a new one a couple of years ago, because he was afraid the 214 was geting old, I dont know the model number, it wasnt the expensive garde it was a step down, has a 27hp Kawasaki , I dont know why, the deck is the same size as the 214, and the tractor is a POS compared to the 214, but it does have the JD name on it. Its made to cut grass period, the 214 was made to handle all kinds of tasks. The new JD has the means to have a blower tiller etc but they are as big a piece of crap as the tractor is, they dont hold a candle to the old one.

Agreed. The department store JD's are pieces of crap. hell i am not even sure if they can handle cutting grass from what i have seen (better hope for a drought). With the higher quality you gotta pay the John deere "Green Gold Fee" if you want something thats actually worth a damn. It's a joke....just give me a B with a woods belly mower on it!!

I love our Simplicity. The foot operated hydro is a big plus because I can steer with one hand and hold my beer in the other. Another big plus is how quick you can take the deck off to change blades. You can have the deck off in under a minute. Ryan

I couldn't agree more. When I work at the local Deutz-Allis dealer we got an 1716H with an 50 inch deck on trade. I tried to get my dad to buy it for about three months but he use to tell me why sould i buy an used lawn tractor for 4500 bucks when I can go to Canadian Tire and buy one for 1500 bucks and get one every couple years. After me harressing him I brought it home . that was in 1989 Dad still uses that 1716 to cut the 3 acres and last year he said I was right. He also has no attentions to buy  an new lawn tractor for some time.

It is absolutely amazing the difference in quality between the old machines and the new. Like ACMowerguy said, they don't hold a candle to the 700 series. I love that 716H I have. What an animal that thing is! Weighing in at 806 lbs without its Dozer blade on, and the weight box out back, that .030 over big ole' one lung Kohler that I got under the hood can push! Its a blast! That surprise snow storm we had a few weeks ago that dropped 14" of heavy wet snow, along with dropping all the tree's round' here, was no match for that 716H wit' them giant aggressive ATV tires out back. I had no idea what it was going to do to move that crap. It actually pushed that heavy crap down the long driveway we have! JoAnna stood there with her mouth hanging open watching that thing clear the driveway. She even said "that thing is unbelievable'! I have another 716H waiting for a resto.... Somethin' else to have fun with!  LOL!

I don't care what anyone says, nothing beats my 1941 B with a 60 combine engine and woods mower. It's a heck of a grass and leaf eater. By the way, who do I look like? LOL. One second thought, don't answer that!

When I lived at home with Mom and Dad we used a old G with a Woods belly mower for years. It got the job done but we finally broke down and bought a new B8200 Kubota in 1988. That thing is still going strong. It's mowed at least 3 acres every week in the summer since new. The hour meter only goes to 999hrs and I quit counting after it rolled over 4 times.

When I got a place of my own I bought a 1760 Kubota and it's a great machine also. I don't think much of their bigger tractors but you can't beat their lawn mowers IMO. Hey, at least they're orange and just as much a AC as the mower in question with the AC stickers.

Posted By: bdallman
Date Posted: 16 Nov 2011 at 8:20am
Yeah my dad had a B8200 for years and years. Those things are stout little dudes that never stop running. Used it to plow snow till the garden and even had a hydraulic wood splitter mounted to it...it must be that orange paint :)...and i would say they are quite a bit better than those AC labeled Murrays!!

m16ty Does the hour meter go to 99.9 or 999. must be99.9 still a lot of mowing. I think kubota would be one of the top mowere today.

I not talking about the department store ones. You can still get a "real" Deere if you are willing to pay for one. And they are a good unit.

The meter goes to nine hundred ninety nine (999). It's got well over 4,000hrs on it. The deck has been more or less rebuilt twice and as had quite a bit of welding on it but the tractor itself hasn't gave any trouble. We haven't spent a dime on the tractor other than oil and filter changes.

m16ty That is increditable to have that many hours. I know kubota mowers are one of the best. I have talked about one as they have a good color. I have a deere I got 2 years ago and it is a good mower but cost 10k.

I don't know about the hydro 716 but the first garden tractor my wife bought was an 716 six speed. and i love it . We are in an snow belt in Canada which we can get  an dumping of snow in a few hours. We have an simplicity power adjust blade on it  and old beast won't stop pushing the snow back. the only thing is it eats belts and tire chains
