I have something which may be of interest here. My neighbor wrecked his unloading auger on his M Gleaner last month during the wheat harvest. He told me as he was moving the M out of his shed, the unloading auger self-deployed, and it damaged the auger and some steel rafters in the shed. It put him out of action for a few days as the auger was rendered unusable. He was able to find a replacement auger at a salvage yard in Ohio.

The interesting thing about it is a guy at the salvage yard asked my neighbor if the auger had ever been updated. My neighbor said he didn't know of any updates. The guy told him to check the control switch for the auger. He said there was supposed to have been a recall on auger control switches years ago. This guy was even nice enough to show my neighbor on another junked Gleaner as to what he was talking about. Once my neighbor saw the other switch, he told the guy his was not like that.

Apparently, the recall switch unit was different in that you have to hold it in place to deploy the auger, rather than just flip the switch and take your hand off it. So, after they loaded the auger on my neighbor's trailer, the guy was nice enough to just give my neighbor one of those updated switches out of one of their junked combines. Now that was nice of him in this day and age I would think.

Well the story doesn't end there. My neighbor started putting 2 and 2 together and remembered that his kids and a neighbor kid were out in the shed the night before the incident, and when he quizzed the kid, the kid volunteered that they were indeed in the combine and apparently "messing around." So apparently one of the kids moved the auger switch and didn't switch it back, and so later my neighbor got screwed when he went to start the combine when the auger rotated up and around unbeknownst to him while he was backing out of the shed.

So this is a classic case of teaching your kids and their friends to stay out of the machine sheds without supervision, or, to respect machinery and keep hands off.

So anyways, I am not around these Gleaners much, but to those of you who have one, beware. If yours doesn't have the recall switch installed on your auger, perhaps you should get one. I don't know how long ago this was instituted, but I know those style of Gleaners are getting old. Maybe the M2's and M3's and L2's and L3's already had this updated switch from the factory? Maybe just the original M's and L's had this switch problem? Perhaps one of the resident AC / Gleaner experts on the board here is familiar with this and can shed more light on this. There's probably not all that many original M's and L's running around these days any more. But.... my neighbor's M is one example that's still ticking.

a buddy of mine was doing some work "up inside" his 1460 combine one day inside his shed, when all of a sudden he heard the engine start on the combine he was inside of!!! he said he was scrabbl'in to get outta it...luckily his twin boys inside the cab didn't switch on any toggle switches! plus his ole lady's lincoln was parked in front of the combine!!! the twins were about 4 years old! to this day (they're 18 years old now) they don't wanna get inside that cab after the butt warming they gots that day when they was little hoodlums!!!

You guys make a good point, one that is often overlooked.

I make a habit of always putting the keys to whatever I am working on in my pocket until I am done. I know that won't always keep the starter from turning on some of these older machines, but it will deter my kids.

The reverse is true as well, where are my kids when I start up or back up anything. It scares me to death to back up even my vehicle if I can't see both of them in front of me. (They are 3 and 7, the perfect height to not be seen) I always make them stand far to the side, or front, where I can maintain a visual contact anytime they are with me when I am backing up anything

that would happen on the early Ls and Ms, on the early L2s and M2s you had to hold your finger on the button to deploy and cradle the auger. on the later ones they brought the one touch to deploy switch back, but there was also a cancel switch so you could use it manually too or cancel an unwanted deployment. I heard back in the day of the guy going down the road and the auge came out in front of a truck, I supose there was some litigation involved too. Or how about the L/M trans that would lock up in gear at any time??? One ran into the building at the dealer at Irwin Ia, luckily it didnt go thru!!!
