After shearing off 3 bolts where the PTO shaft bolts to the PTO gear drive, I  took a closer look at the holes and discovered they are egged out in both the PTO shaft and the short shaft in the PTO drive. What would cause this? Have only run the PTO for a few hours since purchasing the tractor last summer, and this was to drive a 5 ft brush-hog. The brush-hog has a new slip clutch and pto shaft. I don't detect any up and down play in the rearshaft  bearing either.

Are you using the correct bolt??? I had the same problem, "egging" till put the correct bolt in, can't remember where I ordered them from. The correct bolt has a larger shoulder than the threads are. Order at least 2, also if the egging is bad you may need to get that fixed, for the new bolts to help the situation.

agco used to supply a weld on end for the pto shaft where you cut off the old end and weld on the new giving you a proper size hole. Use the correct bolt from acgo. Okie who used to post on here makes the replacement ends also and a lot cheaper than agco. If you want his number ill try to find it. He makes a nice replacement part. Havent seen him here for quite a while. Good luck

  can drill a new hole at 90 degrees and use the corrct bolt might help some

Drill hole  one sixtenth over and put grade eight bolt in . Slip clutch should take care of machine . Clutch might be to tight.

The tractor is only 54 years old or older. In the past 54 years i'm sure the PTO has been used alot so there is wear in both pieces.  
 Don't put a grade 8 bolt in there. Better to replace a shear bolt than all 4 gears and housings.   MACK

I had the PTO stub shaft rebuilt and an old mechanic with a lathe make a new weld on sleeve for $20 for my WD and it works fine. The WD45 did have some trouble with blowing gear boxes so I was told by an old AC mechanic years ago. To get 540 rpm on a 45 you have to throttle back so that might save the gear box. 

I'd hate to see what AGCO would charge for that sleeve. I bought a new sleeve 20 years ago from Deutz-Allis for something like $12 but I'm sure AGCO sees a lot more value in that sleeve today if you can still get it.

Oh no, forget I mentioned rpm and throttle back. LOL

BOLTS are meant to shear,  NOT GEARS and SHAFTS!

If you use OEM bolt and start up slowly should have little problem

The holes are egg shaped because in years past farmers used what ever bolt they had, even if it was too small.
 
Do not use a grade 8 or even a grade 5 bolt. It is a whole lot easier and cheaper to replace the shear bolts than to have to replace gears or cast housings.
 
What I use is a 7/16" grade 2 bolt, long enough that the unthreaded poortion fits all the way from one side to the other of the PTO shaft. Buy a couple of pounds of bolts and nuts and peen the end to keep the nut on.
 
Sometimes you can go all day without breaking a shear bolt, other days it seems like you can't even get the brushhog up to speed before one breaks.

We have never had the pto  bolt shear in any of our WD45's since 1984.
