I am in need of a grille for my AC 180. I was bush hogging this evening and my grille fell off. I did not see it fall, it must have fell straight down. I heard a racket under the mower and saw an orange piece of steel. I was like, "What the...?". When I got off and investigated, this is what I found.

Anyone have a straight, used grille for sale?

Can we say, FUBAR? Think I can hammer it out? LOL.

Has anyone added more catches or different catches for the grille. I was mowing 5-7 ft tall weeds in low 3rd on somewhat rough ground. The 6ft Rhino 172 had no choice but to follow!

Actually I felt a little sick. This is an OEM grille. I bought the tractor 360 miles from home. I took the grille off and put it in the back of the truck to prevent leaving it on the side of I-20. Now I "redesigned" it. Absolutely disappointed in myself. This is a fairly straight tractor that I had planned to tear down and restore proper. Now one of the most seen details is gone. Very sad. I will put better or more catches on it. The two holding it on were tight.

The guy I sold a 185 grille to said he had some similar latches to the originals but they were able to be locked somehow. Not sure how they work, but he is a member on here so maybe he can explain further. Wes can you explain your latches?

Best way is to drill a hole inside the grill on a support bar and another one inside the cowl and have a chain with quick links on the end. Chain should be just short enough to get an arm in to undo one of the quick links to take it off.

A quick fix is to take a plastic cable tie and wrap around the factory latches so they can't come open unless you cut the cable ties. Mike

Skyhigh, I like your idea of the cable ties. Unfortunately its too late for that and I have several hundred, black high quality cable ties in my shop drawer. When I get another grille, I will put check chains or cables on it.

I'm still sick over what happened. Live and learn...

I know your pain, and as others have stated, that grill is history.

My dad always kept the grills on his 170, 180 and 185 tied with a short piece of electrical wire with the insulation on it, which could be reused over and over. He caught one under the tractor while discing, that is when he started tieing them on.

The grill on my 185 has a tight fit and has to be bumped with your palm for it to slip off. I do periodically check the latches.

Lost the grill off my 200, the mower missed it but ran over it with the back tire. The replacement I found had a sheetmetal screw above the factory latch on each side. I drilled a hole in my tractors sheetmetal and use them as an insurance poliicy.

If you have a good grill and use the tractor or take it to shows secure the grill with something other then the latches they are not reliable and grills are getting harder to find a bump or something and they are under a tire and gone. Dad crushed one with the loader on the 200. I make small metal straps with nuts welded on the back and use 1/4 in bolts to hold them in place, 1/4 in holes better than a crushed grill.

I use the zip tie trick on my 185, think it helps when latches catch right too start with.

My 175 has the straps & machine screws like DanWi. I had a minor disagreement with a tree some years ago & a local shop fixed it for me, but meanwhile I found a new one, I seem to remember they were fiberglass & I think they had them at Wenger's in Myerstown, Pa. Here's what I told Cody about. I haven't gotten any latches yet. Our hood has a slight crease in it in the front that holds the grille pretty snug. I ought to invest in some of these latches though. They still wouldn't prevent the latch from simply slipping off of the hook on the hood end. -Wes

Don't feel like the lonely ranger. Mowers and grilles are not always compatible, and discs aren't much better. My 180 grill popped off when I hit a washout and the disc nailed it before i could stop.

If it makes you feel better, what makes my case more aggregious (and makes me a candidate for idiot of the year) was that it happened a few times previously and I DID get stopped in time...then thoughtlessly assumed it "wouldn't happen again" ;-(
