My operator's manual for my HD5 has a procedure for cleaning the brakes / clutches w/ solvent. Basically you put in the drain plugs, fill each side w/ about 3 gallons of solvent, drive straight forward and back several times, and then drain the solvent out. I have not done this yet, but I have had some weakness in the right side brake. Has anyone followed this procedure yet and if yes did you see a significant improvement? Thanks for any advice you can give.

if you have weakness in one side, you need to check if it is oil getting into the steering clutch compartmant or someone went crazy with a grease gun for the throwout bearing. either way, cleaning them will make it better in the short term but it will come back maybe even worse if the solvent cleans the leaky seal too good and makes it leak worse. older machines still have leather seals and solvent will definately dry them out. i would pull the cover for that side and take a look at what ails it and fix the leak. maybe alot of work but it is cold outside to be pushing dirt.

I have done it several times before putting in the HD11 plates, the main reason was to clean the clutch plates and to prevent rusting of the metal to fiber. And to clean out some leaking oil. Pull levers to release the clutches to allow cleaning fluid inside drum.

If you have a weak brake check adjustment on band and the support bolt on bottom of band that comes through bottom case. I just used diesel fuel for solution.

A source of the oil was the wicks used to lube throw-out bearing , since putting in the hose to greas bearing with gun-grease and plugging the wick outlet it solved part of oil problem.
