Patient of mine trains German springer spaniels and has one left from a litter that she can't get rid of. Not sure i am ready for another dog, but if i were, i want smart, loyal, active but not border collie active. Otis was an english bulldog but so atypical for the breed, another one would never have a chance with me. Any thoughts?

Have a Border Collie - well seems somewhere breeder thinks might have some Terrier involved so no papers - active YES but not that it's overbearing but great companion . Problem is evidently throw and retrieve - got that part down well / except the give back part (it's mine now and I am keeping it) the part I just can't solve , even with treats. Will drop the ball 5 foot away , come for treat and if you move for ball she has it and is gone running . Springer would be a good sporting dog and easy tempered , good companion also . Wanted one when I hunted , but then with family I got a tri colored collie and that kind of set the type of dog behavior one expects .
------------- Life lesson: If you’re being chased by a lion, you’re on a horse, to the left of you is a giraffe and on the right is a unicorn, what do you do? You stop drinking and get off the carousel.
