Howdy Friends,,Lookin like I might be putting a spark in the 406 in my 55 Chevy and I'm looking for that old school really deep mellow sound of those glass packs of the 50's and 60's. It will have dual exhaust all the way back to the rear bumper. I do not like the sharp loud sounds of the current style of mufflers. Anyone got any ideas,,,??

Old Chevy truck mufflers were the best quiet sound you could get. JMHO, Tracy ------------- No greater gift than healthy grandkids! |

Many years ago we had two Farmall M mufflers on a Dodge farm truck that had a 318-3 engine. Had a great sound when you were on it hard, but reasonably quiet while cruising. ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. | Got some old Lp molines been putting stainless glass packs on them for muffs. Buying them on eBay. Now they call them resonators. Look sort of cool and sound good. |

To me glass packs are 'tinny' sounding. That's what's on my '90 Blazer. Had turbo mufflers on a built 350 in '76 crew cab dually I used to have. Not loud at an idle, but would rumble when you got on it. For a deeper sound Flow masters have a lower rumble. ------------- Looking at the past to see the future. | I have a 1995 Chevy truck that I had dual exhaust installed. Coming off the engine manifold it has 2 and a quarter inch pipe into cherry bomb glass packs, I wanted three inch out the back of the truck cause I’ve always liked the looks of bigger pipes but the glass packs he had didn’t go up to three inch so I had him line the pipe up to the muffler and weld it to the tapered end and left the smaller end inside the three inch pipe. The truck has the sound of an older muscle car. Quiet when leaving the driveway but roars when you rev it up or going down the road. Always liked reving it in town between the tall buildings on main street and letting it make those pipes sing. On my daughter’s 2014 Chevy truck we left the factory single exhaust but removed the muffler and replaced it with a pipe and left the cat. converter. Sounds great, really surprised she hasn’t gotten pulled over for loud exhaust or being too tall. Also have a 1983 Chevy with a 6.2L diesel and put big dual exhaust on it and had it dump out the side, fun to drive but wow was that annoyingly loud so changed it to dump straight out the back. |

I ran “Hush Thrush” mufflers on my last gas 1 ton, it had a 454 in it. Good semi-quiet just tooling around, but had a good deep sound when you got into it, or had a good load on the trailer. | The "sound" I remember was a nice low mellow sound that was not irritating at all. best way to describe was a low pitch mellow but powerfull sound. When we got to high school, a friend's Father got him an almost new 1956 4 door chevy with a 3 speed with overdrive trans and dual exhaust and he made it sound like a 4 speed and when he got on it,,,it never had that irritatring rasping sound,,of coarse those glasspacks were new and not burned up. I do remember they were quite long and bright orange. He referred to them as Smittys,,,,? |

Been my experience that the longer(22-30”?) flow-thru glasspack type mufflers usually resonate a low smooth sound? Their baffles(internal one directional fins) allow that good quiet flow-thru during normal acceleration. But “get on it” & they exude that power sound that you’re talking about. Of course, a knowledgeable muffler installer guy helps too. Good to understand exhaust harmonic dynamics for best diameter(s) & glasspack positioning to produce best sounds during all occasions. Fun stuff. |

Hey AC,,,yep,,that is exactly what a couple of people that used to have em told me last week. As a fact of the matter,,,,,GEMINI AI told me that the sound harmonics in a longer muffler will be lower pitched instead of the sharper, raspy sounds you hear from the current mustangs and Dodges ,,,it too bad they don't make em about 3-4 feet long,,,,lol.

If space allows, just weld two 30” end to end & you got a 60” glasspack. Or,,, like my BIL’s old 1973?74? Mopar Plymouth 340 Roadrunner that I believe was equipped with dual exhaust, flow-thru mufflers, and then 18-20” resonators(factory glass packs?) positioned at end of tailpipes(one on each side of rear gas tank) & then a short decorative tailpipe to just past rear bumper. I’m thinking that whole setup was OEM? Here’s a 2021 weblink for some guy purchasing a $1500 ss dual exhaust equipped with magnum mufflers & rear resonators for his 73 340 Cuda. On GMs preferred the "Turbo" Mufflers(No Packing) reverse flow to limit Sound but also to boost back pressure SLIGHTLY on the BBC and SBC V8s. Worked better as to Keeping PoPo off my back when built the MOPAR 383 in my old Dodge W300. Duals Smoker right There!!! Some engines even as Two Strokes Required Back Pressure for Torque.

| We ran the turbo corvair mufflers on everything. Used to get them from Walker. Don't think they're made any more. Nice throaty sound when you had your foot in it. The 350hp 327 hydraulic cam in any small block with headers and Corvair mufflers was the ticket for poor boys. |

HMMMmmm,,,,,,corvair mufflers,,well Steve,,,what ever it takes,,I always say,,,!!! I built a 327 with that exact cam because of the hydraulic lifters but ,,,I really liked the solid lifter sound cruising down main street, so I built another 327 bored 30 and ordered the optional Z28 off road camshaft that used the solid lifters,,,CHIT,,,I was in seventh heaven,cruising main st,,,,,,,{I STILL have that camshaft and lifters}
