I remember, or at least I think I do,remember going to a ALLIS-CHALMERS field day long ago when the power shift came out and a guy in something like a 7060 going wide open foward and then reverse hard as he could.
Can one do that?

You can till something breaks. The Allis powershift is a tough trassmission and it will last a life time if its treated right but they didnt have enough modulation for that. I cant say fir sure because ive never tried it. Ive always tried to be as gentle as i could. Not babying it but just smooth

A-C Power Shift operational techniques to live by: #1. Never change directions (F to R or R to F) without using the inching pedal. #2. Do NOT use the transmission brake to stop the tractors motion !!! A round baler is a perfect example of not ever doing that. #3. Keep the transmission brake adjusted so it never applies until you actually get into the "brake zone". #4. Only change gear selections ONE GEAR at a time. #5. Never downshift in high range at full throttle no load. Slow the engine down to probably 1700 RPM or slower and start clicking down ONE at a time, OR depress the inching clutch (which drops back to 4th gear) and then release the inching pedal to reconnect and go down from there. #6. I always preached to never shift 1-2 in high range at full throttle and especially under a load. Enough times of doing that encourages those bolts to shear off inside the transmission. In short, smooooooth is always better than jerky. Change the oil and filter at least every 1,000 hrs ( 500 hrs would be better) and clean the screen down below when doing so.

If there was some clown that actually did slam the shift lever from road gear to reverse without clutching at full throttle......he only did it ONCE. Now, on the 9600 series, you could actually do that. Not a 7000 or 8000 series.

Dr. Allis is correct. Take care of your Powershift & it will last longer than you will. LOL! (Unless you're much younger than I am, of course.)
