I have a 180 I'm restoring and it has the large hole in the hood where the pre-cleaner would have went with no bolt holes, and I have a later serial #12500 180 parts tractor that had a pre-cleaner mounted on the hood.
My old Microfiche shows the 180 without a pre-cleaner on the hood, and the 185 had the hood mounted one? I'm guessing that later serial number 180's had the pre-cleaner mounted to the hood, but does anyone know how the earlier ones without the mounting holes in the hood were setup? Did they have a small pre-cleaner behind the grill mounted right to the air filter housing?
Thanks for any insight!

Without trying to connect all the dots from the summer of 1967 at the release of the One-Eighty, to the very last 185 at some time in 1981, I think it goes like this:   the pre-cleaner extension above the hood was an option, not standard equipment, at least on the early One-Eighty's. It may have become standard equipment on the 185's, or it still may have been an option. On a gas One-Eighty, it would have been an option for sure. Any of those models that didn't have the pre-cleaner above the hood, didn't have anything behind the grille screen. Just a short stack on the air cleaner filter body. Nothing else.

Agree with Dr. Allis. I actually believe it was an option all of the way through the 100 series. I had a 175 diesel with and one without.  The one without had a "factory" cover over the hole on the hood.  Under the hood it was the same filter housing, filter, etc. just nothering connected to the T coming off the filter housing.
