Have a four-cylinder in-line Ford in a Joy air compressor. It runs great for the man in town, but when I get it out here to the farm, it will not run. Can a coil be good and then bad and then good and then bad. I would think once they go bad they’re bad. This will be the third time in a week. I’ve taken it to him. The man who works on it is absolutely incredible. You may not doubt his abilities. He can rebuild your Briggs & Stratton or your CAT C 15 engines. I cannot allow you to doubt his work. We have just got an intermittent problem on this engine. | I had an International 560 tractor that I could never start. Would have the mechanic come and that thing would start. Finally, after a couple times he says let's put an inline fuel filter that they sell at wal mart on this just to be safe. We put one of those in and I never had trouble getting it to run again. |

Is there fuel in the tank and is the shut off turned on?

Things don't happen for no reason. SOMETHING is changing. Is the Ford an overhead valve industrial 134, 174 or 192? ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest. |

Not likely but anything is possible. Since you hinted at it, but did not clearly state, I am guessing that the engine is losing spark? Is it a breaker point ignition, or an 'electronic' type? I would be inclined to look for poor connectivity; I have encountered faulty ignitions switches on several occasions. Also, the corrosion monsters never sleep

| If the key switch also powers the starter engagement, the key switch might not be providing power to the coil/points when cranking. It has happened before. |

There is a 12 to 6 volt knock down . if you are saying you have a 12v battery and a 6 v coil with a drop resistor... THAT IS BAD... Must be very OLD... Get rid of both and get a new 12v coil with INTERNAL resistor.. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

As a test, try a jumper wire straight from the battery to the coil, bypassing all of the existing wiring.

I know this is going to come across as a snide comment, but can you get it to run when it is in town? The point is you have two variables, location and operator. Maybe it is just coincidence so far that it runs in town but not at the farm, or maybe your man in town is doing something a little different than you. With any luck it will fail in town, and your man can then see the failure. Nothing more frustrating than intermittent problems. When I run into something like that at work and finally find a potential cause, I never say I fixed THE problem, I tell them I fixed A problem. I hope this helps.
