Have owned and operated Deere, Allis, Perkins, IH and Cummins diesel engines on the farm for close to 55 years of memory. Was fueling the 7045 Friday afternoon getting ready to start cutting silage. Ever since last fall when we got it all fixed up tip top mechanical shape she has ran awesome. I was listening to it and thought this is one of the sweetest sounding engines of all I’ve ever had. The first half a load of silage, smiling from ear to ear, suddenly I felt like a shudder go through the tractor. I slowed down and holy crap what a serious miss! Smoking (black) something awful. 😞 |

| Injector tip blew off ?? A pushrod has jumped out of place because the adjuster bolt backed off ?? are the two most likely. Pay attention to the blow-by hose or remove the oil fill cap with the engine running. Bad puffy blow-by is a failed piston. |

| Blown head gasket is (for me) an easy diagnosis. No change in blow-by fumes. No real change in exhaust smoke. When cranking with the fuel shut off the cranking speed is up and down because you've lost the compression on two cylinders. Regardless, park it. I've had a couple blown head gaskets in the past that the operators must have ran for a couple hundred hrs like that and then the top deck of the block gets burned away. |

Oh it is definitely parked! I won’t run it like it is. If no change in exhaust = blown head gasket, then it is NOT a blown head gasket. Dad was following me in case I hit a wet spot and it smoked so bad he thought it was on fire. It looks and sounds terrible. I did slowly drive it home, and will drive it on a hauler I guess. Going to be a few months. |
