I would try to have in neutral if possible. But I do not know if that is correct! Never had mine apart.

I had mine off a lone time ago (20 years). I took it off in neutral, but then I had a difficult time to put it back on.  It seems to me that it had to be in reverse to replace it.  Everyone I talk to says it should be in neutral.  I don’t know what my problem was.

Are you pulling the shifting lever or the whole transmission cover?  My comment refers to the whole cover.

I believe 2nd gear is where you want it, been a few years since I had one apart. Mine was jammed in two gears so it came apart where it was. Took several tries before I got the tranny in 2nd and back together.

There are some pretty good shift-tower threads on here if you search. Sugarmaker did one.

What does the service manual say???

-------------
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY
