Were all series of D-17's engine speed rated @ 1650 RPM? What were the 170's and 175's rated at? I know the 226 Gleaner engines were faster but what were they rated at? Thanks

D-17 and Gleaner model "E" combines were rated load at 1650 RPM. D-17 high idle no-load was 1950-2000 RPM. The Gleaner engine i think was 1850 no-load. All 170-175 gas engines were rated load of 1800 RPM and high idle of 2000 to 2025 RPM. All three of these applications have their own specific governor weights and springs.

Thanks Dr., my D-17 series IV is low at 1500 +/-. What needs to be don e to get it up to speed?

Wide open throttle no load should be 2000 RPM for a D-17 tractor. What are you checking the speed with?? Hard to imagine it is that slow, unless it has the wrong governor spring installed in it. Nevertheless, there is linkage under the gas tank that may have an issue or simply needs to be adjusted to pull the long rod (to the engine) back farther. There is a max speed screw located vertically on the governor spring cover that could be adjusted upward to the max setting, but that usually only gains 75 to 100 RPM max. The long throttle rod from under the gas tank to the engine should be able to pull the governor lever arm on the engine back to where it hits the timing cover or about the 10:30 o'clock position for max speed. *** Just a note about engine speeds: With high idle (no load) at 1950 to 2000 RPM, the "rated load" speed of 1650 RPM is when you have lugged the engine down to that "rated" speed from the high idle no load speed. It is where the manufacturer makes a claim of 63 flywheel HP (53 PTO HP) @ 1650 Rated RPM.
