Was using my 7040 pulling a spreader, got up to full speed and had only transported probably 3/4 of mile from home ,was suddenly pulled up fast,like someone jumped on the brakes,wheels skidded the last few feet. Clutch in she was still running but wouldn’t move in gear tried low range which worked luckily and i drove it back home. So i have pulled floor plate up and taken the range section cover off and found that the low range gear on pinion shaft is galded together. It is pressure lubed ,so im not sure how this happened,only use this tractor in high range so I need to try and sort it😵‍💫.What’s the process here? And getting the welded gear off could be challenge id think. Cheers

The process for fixing that rear end would be quite extensive. Once the rear end is rolled out, a complete disassembly is required. Lift chest off, wheels and final drives off,brakes out, and differential out the top. Then the pinion shaft can be removed once the bad gear is cut off. Not an easy job and very time consuming, plus probably expensive. Used parts should be available, but it might be as easy to get a complete rear end assembly and just roll it in. Then again, it might be time to cut bait and let her go and move on to something different. Good luck in your decision.

Thanks Lyn,i can get another rear end from wrecker across Australia ,but $5000 to get it over to me. Have thought about cutting the either low range gear off in situ which would give me back the high range and no low range,which would be fine,,but not alot of room for the torch and if i stuff up i wont even have low range . Have you seen this happen before? Just don’t want to see it happen to my other two workers(7060,7080),cheers

It happens. Not every day, but my first was in the summer of 1977 on a 7080. It's always going down the road and always low range that seizes. You are a more ambitious man than I am, thinking that you can literally tear that rear end all apart, torch off the seized gear and put it back together without low range on the pinion shaft. It's a bad deal for sure, but you aren't the first.

Anyway to stop it from occurring doc? Overfill the transmission oil? I thought maybe the oil pipe that feeds it has come off? Was pondering over it today and Im thinking the quickest repair would be to split and remove top shaft and take of the slow speed drive gear off instead of the pinon drive gear ,then assemble back together,this would give me the 10 high range gears which is all i use. Shouldn’t need to disassemble any major stuff like finals and diff.

I've seen it a couple of times. Certainly not a common thing. One was a 7020 that had been pulled home a fair distance with a non running engine. Lack of transmission lube did that one in. I don't recall the details of the other one. Your solution would work, but you will need to either cut the teeth off of the upper gear or make a spacer the same length as the gear if you remove it.
