Group! Hope everyone is well, I haven't done much but read and listen here lately! I have an odd situation. I'm helping to clean up an old dairy farm and have come across what I believe to be the cleaner acid used to flush the pipes after milking. The labels are SHOT and best I can say is some of it came from Westfalia (now defunct?) I can post some photos if it will help, but they are about 15 gallon jugs of the stuff. Local 'haz mat' recyclers (the ones run by the state where you bring your stuff to a collection center) hasn't been too helpful, and they consider what I have "industrial quantities" all of that said, how do you get rid of it? water it down? mix it somehow? I want to do the responsible thing, but I just keep hitting a dead end Please and Thank You!

Do you know any trucker that has an aluminum trailer? That pipeline acid works great cleaning aluminum. ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

Above is the MSDS sheet for caustic base By listing name of company and if acid or base solution you can probably find similar product . IT looks like it has some worth for resale - but finding that buyer - or place to dispose properly - ??? Westfalia, westfalia- surge are all now part of GEA farm technologies. Acid rinse is mostly phosphoric acid. I suppose you could use it as rust remover. I should add here never ever mix with bleach, clorine gas can be a killer.

Phosphoric Acid in a strong mix can etch glass , in full strength it will eat through bottle right at top of air liquid line - use to use it to clean floors in coating area and left a container sit 1/2 full , next day went to pick it up and only had top half of jug . Bad stuff in high strength as will eat into calcium - like bones if you get it on hands . Milk is one of the neutralizers for contamination . Whatever you do, DO NOT MIX IT ANYTHING except water. When say ‘cleaning up an old dairy’ do you mean a dairy farm? Or a dairy processing plant? If it’s a dairy farm, and the pipeline system is intact, run a clean cycle or two thru it and see what happens. The sink where the milking machines set in, fill that basin with hot water, and a cup or two of cleaner, do not mix from different containers. ------------- I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science. |

| Got any source for a chunk of litmus paper? Would give you a good idea of how strong it is…..assuming you can’t read a pH or figure out something from the label. |

Probably still good, is it still orange? I think theirs was orange. It will have a smell to it. You shouldn't get it on you, but it really just stings a little. It's not like full strength acid. Put some in a bucket with some rusty bolts or something, they should turn black after soaking awhile. You might find a plastic barrel pump there somewhere. |

| There is no way i would use an old solution in my milking equipment. And they are correct, it can create a noxious gas if it interacts with a variety of household chemicals. You can do two things, you can call your local sanitation office, most of them have a program for chemical products disposal or you can dilute in a tremendous amount of water |

In actual use, after every milking, twice or three times per day, that stuff was cycled throughout the milk pipelines and then went right down the drain, often right out on the concrete to be washed into the manure pond. Dairy farmers wives smelled strongly of the stuff no matter how many showers they took nor how much Evening in Paris they spritzed on. Being used to it, they couldn't smell it; but, the rest of us sure could - it would burn your eyes when they came in the place. The local feed-mill sells it in 5-gallon buckets with those plastic nipples in the lid, just like oil or hydraulic fluid. They have more loafers than they have chairs; so, the loafers got to dragging the five-gallon buckets out from under the shelf and sitting on them. The thing about acid is you think you have gotten away with it until the affected clothing gets wet with water, maybe days later - that's when it falls apart and gets full of holes. These feed-mill loafers pants and underwear started dissolving in the laundry and their wive's started fussing and it took weeks before they started making connections with each other and still they had not yet connected it with sitting on the buckets of acid. Then, after sitting in a real seat behind the counter and hearing all these guys lamenting the fact that their favorite underwear and pants were coming apart in the wash, the feed-mill owner was standing, talking on the phone, when he put his boot on top of one of the acid buckets. When he would press down with his boot, a tiny puddle of acid would squish out around that plastic nozzle; when he released the pressure, the acid disappeared back into the bucket and nobody would ever have suspected it had ever escaped. Press down and the acid would bubble out; release and it would disappear back where it came from. So, the mystery of the eaten up underwear was solved. Think about this the next time you leave one of those buckets full of expensive oil or hydraulic fluid in the back of the truck in a monsoon.

The PH would tell part of the story - ACID or BASE and the strength . To dilute either 1 part container to 10 parts water will lower 1 point on PH If that steel drum is not lined with plastic you can almost be sure it's not acid based . ------------- Faith isn't a jump in the dark. Nitric and Phosphoric Acid. Can't use it for food-grade, but you can use it for other cleaning purposes. Mind the strength, and check any materials you put in it, just in case there's a possibility of dangerous reactions. ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest. |
