Just over the fence is Bradley's Pleasure Cemetery.
The tall black stone visible at the left edge of the photo is the gravestone of world-famous 5-string picker Larry Beasley.

I believe that is a Suzuki Samarai sitting there in the driveway; a few years ago, those things were prevalent around here with about 50% of the driving public owning one; they would convoy on weekends to various offroad trail places, as many as thirty or forty of them together --- all in Suzuki Samarais; now, they are as rare as hens teeth.

This barn sits close against the highway.
In it's day, this barn was always black as a Crow's wing with those bright white doors.
Prior to the 1973 opening of The Cumberland Parkway, two miles South of here, this was THE way to travel.
I can remember as a child there being big motel advertisement signs on both ends of this landmark barn; the sign on the West end advertising a motel in Somerset and the East end a motel in Russell County, Dreamland, if I remember correctly.
If you look close, you can just make out where it said something on the long side of the barn facing the road.
37.129860°N 84.872146°W 353.568 m 1,160'
The first three photos are taken from the East side looking West; the fourth photo, dated Wednesday_03-November-2021, is taken through the filthy glass of a fast-moving pickup from the West side looking East.
 - --- -
In that fourth photo, you can see a TV antenna; there is a stretch through this area where you can get excellent analog TV reception; there is even an "antenna guy" working from his home out in the country who sells, installs, and services the antennas.
Just a few miles in either direction and no matter the antenna nor how high the hill, you can't get anything.

Those overhead doors have been on that barn since I was a very small child.
I was always told that the guy who owned Somerset Overhead Door owned that barn/farm.
Such doors are impractical on a livestock barn; cattle would soon have them warped all out of shape.
Note that this barn has underground electrical service which is highly unusual even for a house in Kentucky.

The sad reality is if you're not using it, livestock, storage, whatever, they are just an expense. It costs real money to maintain buildings and if they are not paying back in some way, people just let them go. Humans are a lot like hydraulics! The path of least resistance.
I've got some old buildings here that aren't in great shape but still have stuff stored in them. Need to figure something out as they will need to start coming down at some point.

The Big Blue Barn

Standing just as plumb and square as the day she was built.
This barn was wood boxed and then the wood covered with old-style corrugated metal barn roofing.
Why on earth would somebody paint a barn blue ?
The later additions don't improve upon the appearance; she would look better if all that were gone.
I am sure this big barn has historical significance and I intend to find out.
The huge Columbia City Cemetery is immediately behind the barn.
Merchant Street and the Columbia Fire Department are in the foreground.

Where I grew up, 90%-95% of farm buildings were painted either white or red. In our particular little neighborhood, there was one farm that all buildings were a grayish-blue, that farm as long as can remember, the owner did not raise any livestock, and rented out the cropland.
------------- I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

It seems the standard color for barns was either red or white. In our neighborhood in eastern Kansas, most old style barns had a Star painted on the front. I have a Barn book with different photos of various barns across Kansas, including round barns. Most barns were built to serve a purpose , being livestock and hay. I have seen barns with the loft taken area and filled with large round bales, which adapted them to still be used today. Sadly though, some barns have outlived their usefullness as most doors were only so wide and you can't even drive a modern vehicle in them or store today's modern farm equipment so in turn they have gone into disrepair, fallen down, or been torn down. The landscape scene of rural America has definitely changed

"The Block Barn" - the white barn - is where J.R. kept his main herd sire, along with his horses and show cattle.
There were miles of white plank fence around this place, always freshly painted and in good repair; real White Oak planks; none of that ridiculous eyesore white plastic fencing.
Once a year, after I was old enough to drive, I would take his main herd bull to the stockyards, put him on the Fairbanks & Morse, and catch his weight, keeping the weight a secret.
You had better have a good White Oak floor in the trailer; else, he would fall through; brand-new treated Pine wouldn't hold him.
Whichever bull it may be at the time, he always weighed over a ton, which was huge back in those days, bigger by far than anything around here; although now, it is not uncommon to have a big Charolais weighing 3,600- to 3,800-lbs.
Once the weight was caught, they would brush and clip and clean him up; and, with a fancy Silver-mounted show halter and polished ring in his nose, Ab Kerns, the shortest man we knew, would hold his lead shank while a professional photographer would take his picture.
The Times Journal would run a full page with the bull's picture and the instructions to drop by the newspaper office and place your best guess as to the bull's weight; you were of course encouraged to drop by the farm and see the bull before you made your guess.
The person with the closest guess would win a steak dinner for two, with all the trimmings, from the Western Sizzlin' Steak House; and, I think, a cash prize; five big hunnert-dollar bills if I remember correctly.
J.R. was doing this for years before we had a Western Sizzlin'(which, alas, we haven't had for years now; ever since Union Underwear sent all the jobs to Mexico and put all those thousands of women in the unemployment line, Western Sizzlin' wasn't the only thing we lost.); I don't remember where the steak dinners for two were from prior to that.

Three Barns on Railroad Street
https://ibb.co/pj67nHxX" rel="nofollow">
There are three long barns in this cluster; the longest(at right) being 138'.
The orange device in the foreground of the first photo is a Derail; using a standard track switch lever, it can be engaged or disengaged.
It's purpose is to protect both sides from runaway rail cars.
When engaged, any rail-car contacting the Derail is derailed so that it cannot proceed any farther.
As with any long-distance photo, photographic compression is deceiving; the camera is 2/10-mile(335-yards) from the barns; the Water Street "Stop" sign seems to be very close to the barns; when, in fact, there are two separate pastures and exactly 1/10th of a mile(170-yards) between the Stop sign and the barns.
The High Iron across the mid-ground is Norfolk Southern's 337-mile Cincinnati, New Orleans, & Texas Pacific Railway

Would that be heat for the barn?? I've seen short grain bins like that used around here for coal to stoke the stove or furnace. We have a coal mine close here and for years I heated my shop with coal. Many in this area still heat with coal and many use a small grain bin with an auger feed system to the coal burner.

You may very well be right; Kentucky sits on thick seams of Coal.
When I was a kid, everybody burned Coal; our entire little town smelled strongly of Coal smoke.
Then, Siegler came out with the Kerosene Stove; Kerosene was dirt cheap; so, the Warm Morning Coal stoves were soon replaced.
Everything considered, Coal is cheaper than fire wood, even if you live in the middle of the woods.

The Red Barn, farthest away, May-2024 Street View shows the North third of the roof entirely gone, trusses and all, and scattered around; August-2025 Satellite View shows this to have been repaired.

A Harvestore and a Silo Dominate the Landscape

These silos are on the West side of the new KY Hwy 55 Bypass at Mile #13.75(42)
37°21'47.79" North Parallel - 85°17'47.56" West Meridian 943' Above Sea Level
Looks can be deceiving.
https://ibb.co/21bcxHpM" rel="nofollow">
In the above shot, the Camera is Northbound on the new KY55 Bypass at mile 12.94.
The black Barn is 0.30-mile at 357° from the Camera at: 37°21'24.11" North Parallel - 85°17'45.98" West Meridian 898' Above Sea Level
The Harvestore is 0.75-mile at 357° from the Camera.
The Harvestore and it's Silo mate are 0.45-mile beyond the Barn; Reid's Chapel Road\KY1799 lies between the Barn and the Silos.

https://ibb.co/WJ0TnSq" rel="nofollow">
You probably already know this; a standard silo unloads/feeds off the top; so, last silage in is first silage out; a Harvestore unloads/feeds off the bottom; so, first in is first out, which is a huge advantage.
