Like him or not he was a hell of a player

He was undisputedly the hit king and one of the all time best players.  He should be in the HOF as a PLAYER.  They can put an * saying as a player, but banned as a manager.

There's part of me who thinks that if they decide now to make him eligible for HOF, his family should tell them to stuff it.  If they couldn't do it when alive, it means nothing now that he's dead.

I agree completely

Pete Rose was the spark the ignited the Big Red Machines.  Will never forget their incredible run up to the back to back World Series Championship!  Used to listen to their games on my Orange Panasonic Baseball radio while heading off to sleep - oh what great times we had back then!  ~ Orangeman

Had some Black Marks on his record but that record still carries.  May he be at rest and playing ball forever.

Maybe if he had just told the truth about betting on his own team. But he lied about it for over a decade

Guess I'm the odd man out here, but oh well.  I think in no way does he belong in the hall in any form.  What he did, with the history of the Black Socks scandal, is just 1000% taboo and if he had 1/2 a baseball brain he knew it to be so!  It's a non-starter with baseball, and hopefully always will be.  JMO

I have to respectfully disagree Tbone. The Black Sox bet and threw the series. Pete Rose bet against his team but hit over .300 in the series and stole bases if I remember correct. I'd say the man knew the other team was better. And I'd bet the ones that banned him probably bet the same way

Yep, odd man out, I know that. And you entitled to your opinion as well.

But, I’m trying to understand your comment? He (says) he never bet against his team. And, he was managing when he bet, not playing…??

So, he’s a manager, betting on his team to win. K, hear me out. There’s more to betting than win or lose. By how many runs? What pitcher got the win or save? Lose a couple bets, owe the bookie a favor, try and only win by no more than 2 runs, meddle with the game in some way you otherwise wouldn’t have….and lose it. The potential for that influence is there. Because of the Black Socks, any association with gambling is forbidden, rightfully so, and he had to know that. Probably why he lied about it for so long.

Just saying.

Maybe you meant Joe Jackson in your comment? Just trying to follow.

I was a kid when all this went down but I thought I remembered an interview with him stating he bet as a player and a manager

Maybe. I don’t recall that one way or other. Manager is when he got busted. I can’t imagine he bet against the Big Red Machine! They were pretty awesome. Anyway, I gave my opinion and reasoning. That and a couple bucks will get you a coffee I suppose. Take it easy.
