Have a hickory tree, that dropped its leaves early last fall, now this spring no new leaves(yet)or growth. Trunk is approximately 14”-16” across, so not an old, old tree. Never has produced fruit in the time we have been here. Did notice this is the only Hickory tree in the neighborhood, was always told that hickory’s grow in pairs, if you see one there should be another about 50-75 yards away, or is that just an old wive’s tale?

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

The only thing I can add is about one hickory tree on my parent's farm in central Ohio. It was there long before I was around in 1950 and has had a crop almost every year. Tends to be more every second year. There is not another hickory tree within a quarter mile of it and probably further.

I have a lone hickory tree in my back yard.  It seems happy and this spring the ground was covered with nut hulls.  Think they cleaned the underside of the deck.
