Subject: Acetylene torch questions

I recently bought a very nice like new Victor acetylene torch.
It’s the smaller one (100) I believe?
It’s missing the torch handle but has everything else.
Cutting head, rosebud, 3 welding tips hoses and gauges .
Mt question is this, do I need back flow protectors or flash back arrestees and what’s the difference?
Also looking for a torch handle to go with it.

Yes, you need the flashback arrestors. They protect YOU and are a worthy investment/requirement.

You are after what will be referred to as the "mixer". The Victor and Harris/Calorific designs have been copied for years, but the used originals can be had on Ebay and are worth rebuilding being supported well.

I have original "Smith" torches and gauges and they are prized possessions.

flash back arrestors are just that... they prevent flash back if something goes wrong... And they dont cost but a few dollars, so why not use them ?  ........... also, they are required by OSHA for all Businesses.

Kind of like seat belts... You dont need them 99% of the time, but when you run into a brick wall, you wish you had it on !! Wink

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Many of the newer torch mixer heads already incorporate Back Flow preventers, my replacement torch to my antique Union Carbide set I could no longer get regulator parts for is built that way.

I also have a large Smith set. The gauges have nice steel covers for use on a welding truck.
The oxy gauge needs rebuilt.
This smaller set will be nice for everyday use.

I'll look at the shop for the contact information of a gent I use to rebuild regulators. He is inexpensive yet very good if parts can be sourced.

Well Thad.  I was fixing to get my tanks and equipment out to start torching an old truck box that was used for feed storage.  Now you've got me thinking I'm going to blow up.  Definitely going to check and see if I have arrestors on the new torches/regulators i bought!

I have both the Victor medium mixing chanber and the large one with cutting head only , I have been using propane as fuel for cutting for last 25 years and just accetylene for brazing work . Did buy a rosebut for the propane as the one for acceteline poped and flashed when run with propane . Was thinking of going to MAPP Gas as around here most places will not fill accetilene tanks now

The arrestors or backflow are for when an awe happens, if the line gets severed or burn, stop the flame from getting to the tank. Really a good thing to have. HTH Tracy
