Implement in question is JD 450 pull type sickle bar mower. When found in the barn across the road, the D15 had been hooked up to this thing for close to 20 years. I'm now trying to rehab it too for mowing pond dams, ditches, clip hay fields, etc. Checked the cutter bar and about half dozen guards are loose or bent.......sickle has one loose section but has serrated sections that should sharpen up OK. Believe it or not, I salvaged an old work bench that has a grinder, upon which is mounted the V shaped grinding wheel used to sharpen sickles. In my experience, most sickles have an easy to separate connection point.......a pitman or bolt to remove. This one has neither. Short of unbolting and taking the thing apart, I can't see a way to get the sickle out. And not sure it is going to clear the tire on left side of machine if I do. Anybody have special knowledge with these things?   |

IF JD 450 trailing is like the JD 350 3 pt mower you need to rotate pto to get sickle out to the farthest point of stroke then the driven end is visible. It has a bolt/nut that holds a greaseable pin in place. Remove bolt and lift pin out, push bar back in under to remove. Keep that wobble box well greased, zerk is under removeable push in disc, they're really expensive to rebuild when it fails. ------------- AC 200, CAH, AC185D bareback, AC 180D bareback, D17 III, WF. This is a close up of the wobble box / sickle connection, and as shown, is extended to furthest extent. So remove the cross bolt and all that will somehow come apart to slide the sickle out? BTW, sighting down the sickle, it is aimed right to hit the middle of the left side tire. Bar doesn't look it, but could have been tripped back and not reset.  |

Take bolt out, try moving so arm is in all the way in as at 1 place it has room to come up, pin should lift up and clear the sickle end it's in. Isn't handy to do but it should come out. I sharpen all my sickles with a 2 inch pad grinder. Works well once you get the hang of it. HTH Tracy ------------- No greater gift than healthy grandkids! |
