No Cummins for me. My dream tractor would have the distinctive twin stacks and AC power!! But it's not mine and people can do want they want. Ryan

2 of my 3 articulated tractors have Cummins. I’d love to see a stock 4w-305 run with my 8970. There’s a reason the 855 is so popular in articulated tractors.

When you run them with the original engine you will understand why they are swapped out

I just commented if I was ever lucky enough to have a rare tractor like this that is over 40 years old which only around 300 were made that I would want it original.

Guess I can see both sides. I like original too. But if it takes a repower to keep the whole tractor out of the salvage yard.

Doug, I have put a little over 3000 hrs on my 305. The engine was a good dozer engine for the early 60's, naturally aspirated of course then the farm equipment gurus destroked it and twin turboed it with 1970's era technology. And don't get me wrong for what it was in the early 70's she was a winner. But todays technology is so much more fuel efficient and the longevity of say a 60 series detroit is way longer nd less to rebuild with parts readily available. And for the purists yes the square cab dual muffler is what I like too but put that muffler on the corner of the cab and cut my fuel consumption by 20 percent and not have to rebuild it again after 3000 hrs and have a tractor that starts at minus 15 celcius no block heater running on the genertor when its on my grain buggy in the field... I don't want to ruin a great 'rare' tractor, I just don't have a spare $200k for a used 300 hp 4wd, and mine does a great job on my farm

I’d say “go ruin an 8550 instead of the 305” because there was a quite a few 8550s but not 305s… But still I like original ones… Makes me sick how many people do repowers on rare tractors but would kill you if you did it on a rare car… But I guess it’s their tractor to ruin. My opinion is that a tractor that is repower is basically the same a being salvage.
Just putting my 2 cents in…

The BigIron ad says previous owner swapped a 350 cummins into that 305. From your comment, I'm thinking you may have swapped an 11.1L Detroit into your 305?Per the fuel usage, I looked up the Nebraska Tractor Test #1262 for AC 8550, October 1977(weblink attached). Wow! Under heavier loads, it ranged from about 14-17.5 gal/hour.... So comparably, your Detroit(& maybe this 350 cummins) swapped 305 is getting 11.2-14 gal/hour? That is amazing fuel savings! So with a 20% fuel savings over OEM, you're now getting every 6th hour fuel free? http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2630&context=tractormuseumlit" rel="nofollow - http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2630&context=tractormuseumlit

7060, yep you are bang on, mine was right in the 16.5 to 17 gallon per hour usage. I have a truck with the 12.7 detroit @ 485 hp and it will give me 7.25 mpg all day running the highway at 80,000# and am figuring an 11.1 set at 330 hp will be a delight in the 305, both to drive and to pull up to the fuel tank with at the end of a long day. Interesting fact, my previous truck with a cummins formula 5, was getting me 5.1 mpg doing the same job as this one, so going by that I feel the 11.1 is a more fuel efficient option than the 855 cummins, and lets be honest, in another ten or twelve year I wont need the 305 so shouldn't have to worry about overhauling the 11.1, if it needs it by then that is. And let me tell you, there is nothing more frustrating than trying to tell some one how to start an old school diesel in the cold weather then getting to the field to find out they didn't follow the quirky way you told them and the batteries are now dead...and all you wanted to do was combine the last 25 acres of corn on the frozen ground this morning...or you took the generator out and plugged the block heater in to come back three hours later to find some one stale your generator...and your extension cord, and the block is dead cold...
Have not started the swap yet, I have to get my skid steer out of my shop and then hoping the 305 will run long enough to get to the back of the shop to tear into it there, or at least determine the extent of what I am into

Cheap displacement is why you saw so many.
I'd love to see a 3406B powered Steiger line up against your 8960... ;)
If history went another direction, we might have saw a 4W425 with a 844 Allis, which from what I hear about the truck engines (when they did run...lol) it probably would stomp on the Cummins pretty good too.

Keep us posted, I do like the 60 series as well, we have a few trucks with it. Its not a Caterpillar, but its better than a Cummins. our 11.1L is very impressive for its displacement, our M11 on the other hand has much less performance. pretty bad when a 3.21 geared 11.1L can launched 90K in the field and roll 65 mph (eventually...lol ex wal-mart tractor so its speed and RPM governed) with relative ease, while the 3.90 geared M11 will launch great, but is hanging its tongue out to roll 65 with 75K.

Yup Cummins is a junk motor. That’s why CIH, Deere, NH, Agco, Versatile all ran them over the years along with several truck manufacturers and countless industrial applications. Let me guess so many folks yanked 426’s in favor of 8.3’s because their wrench’s were getting rusty?

tell me why CNH and Agco use so much Cummins stuff nowadays? ;) Deere only usesCummins when they cant build something themselves, otherwise they prefer not to use one either.
MTS thinks so highly of the Cummins they tell Versy to leave it out of the frame when they get the base tractor from Versy, because its getting a Cat.
Glider kits arent dead, they are just alot more expensive because you have to buy a X15 powered Glider kit...there has been more than one brand new Pete or KW get their ISX/ X15 pulled for a Cat swap.
Worst engine in the world? far from it. Best engine in the world? Far from it.

Just for the record here, I am not against cummins engines, I actually have quite a few of them and am happy with them. I have several that have thousands of hours and others that have 100's of thousands of miles on them, and they all run great with low maintenance throughout the years. And I have some allis chalmers engines I wouldn't trade for anything else in there place
