I have used liquid Gun Blue on lathe tools for a few years... Sand them down, polish and then apply the liquid. Turns the steel BLACK.. wash off and rub with oil.. Nice finish.

I recently got a set of 3/4 inch impact sockets ( old) that were pretty well rusted up.  I decided to sand blast them to get them clean.. Leaves a semi rough surface, but very clean.  Brushed the Gun Blue on them, set for a couple minutes, then wash off.. Turns a light black color.. Put oil on a rag and rub into the surface, then wipe off.. They really look good now.

Always heard the metal had to be cleaned / polished / shiny prior to the application.. If you have old rusty tools , this really is a good restore .......... sandblast and apply.
