Had a really good day today. Finally got around to replacing the brakes and right side drum on my D17. Got along so well on the right side Mutt and I started the left side. Replaced left and right pinion seals, right side drum, installed new brake pads. Started the left side, new brake pads, have the drop housing off and also replacing the axle oil seal. Also replaced both housing pan gaskets, cleaned, followed by new oil. Having a issue getting the snap ring out so we called it a day. I’m pleased with our progress in 6 hours.

You got that right captain, but it went better than I anticipated.

What snap ring are you trying to remove?                     MACK

Axle gear snap ring. I’m letting the remaining oil drip out the housing overnight to get a better look at it. My factory manual says to remove it by going up through the bottom of the final drive housing. Getting a different pair of snap ring pliers tomorrow to get a better hold of it.

I tried going in from the side were I removed the inner bearing cap. I removed the bolt, washer and shim, bearing cone. Just no room to remove it unless the bearing cup is removed.

It can try you. Use two big screwdrivers to pry it back on.                    MACK

Finished up around 1 today Mack. Took the axle to my local machine shop and had the bearing removed so I could replace the seal. Pressed the bearing back on, and reinstalled in the drop housing. Can’t tell how nice it is to have functional brakes. And I finally can lock my brakes without it drifting off. Easy to lock a brake left or right brake and spin it on a dime. Now, need to fix my power steering leak ugh. That repair will start next week.

Your pic suddenly made me feel jealous. Nice straight looking tractor.

Thanks JC, it’s a work in progress. She has some dings but I have completed a lot of repairs. It has the wrong shroud and grill on it due to something coming off of the loader and damaging it. I purchased the tractor without the loader. I have the correct shroud and grill. It’s a 1959 3 bar grill.
