I have an AC fridge made by Lantz thats still keeping beer cold - but is cycling alot , anyone familar with fridges from 1968- 73 ? Id assume they all work the same, AC bought this company in Italy to get in the same business as White Consolidated Industries to help avoid being bought out- Im gonna give the coils and things a good cleaning later- can it be recharged with freon ? TIA,

Im no expert, but i would think if it was low on freon, it would take a LONG TIME to get cold....... If it GIVES UP THE HEAT fast and cycles back on, that sounds more like non insulated / air leaks... ???

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Has anything changed as far as product placement inside or thermostat probe?  If the thermostat is hanging out in mid air, the air over it will change dramatically and cause short cycling, an empty refrigerator will cycle many more times an hour than a full one.  Try placing a box, empty or full, near the thermostat to help out.  Refrigerant can be added but chances are it was R-12 and that's hard to get.  If you replace it with R-134 remember to only charge it to 80% of original spec. on the tag.  If you replace the drier make sure it's the same size or allow for the difference in your 80% calculation.  I converted mine several years ago, original compressor, changed oil, replaced the start components with a 3-in-1 unit and it works fine.  Mine had a leak I had to repair, some over-achiever put line tap valves on it when it probably just needed cleaning cause that's where the leak was.

All refrigerators since the early '60's work on the same basic principle... compress, condense, reject heat... expand, evaporate, accept heat.  The refrigerant, regardless of type, works the same way... just at different vapor pressures and temperatures.

I can say with confidence that it CAN be fixed, and CAN be charged, and you can even have it converted to some new refrigerant if need be, but it might be costly.  It wouldn't keep ME from considering it...

If you've given it a thorough cleaning, and it's still not performing, it's time to check the charge level, and current draw, to determine wether you've got a failing compressor, or a low charge.  Aside from a loss of seal or insulation, the only 'part' to wear out, is the compressor (could be a piston, or a scroll).  The heat exchangers can get brittle and crack, or develop other leaks, which will typically stop it from working completely.  The only electrical function to fail, is the thermostatic switch which starts and stops the compressor... when the compressor is running, you'll feel/hear it vibrate and gurgle.
