I need to replace the drive shaft oil seal (in the differential case) on the right side of my 1956 CA. What surprises await me when I remove the actuator support and actuator assembly? I assume the support and assembly come off as a unit, but the diagram shows a retracting spring and cup. Is that spring/cup  going to fly off to places unknown when the support housing clears the differential case? Is the drive shaft going to come off with the actuator assembly or will it stay in the differential? Any general or specific advice will be appreciated.

bob... just be be clear, you are going to pull ONE final drive case off the differential housing so you can replace the seal on the side of the differential case, where the pinion half shaft plugs in ??

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

As the diagram shows, the live clutch parts stay bolted to the differential.
The outside half shaft comes off with the final drive. When you take the clutch off, the inside half shaft will come out off the differential with the clutch.  If the half shaft does not come out with clutch, it can be pulled out of differential to replace the seal.
The seal can be pried out of bearing carrier, and a new one tapped in with a seal driver.
Replace half shaft, then replace clutch, then final drive.  Might be a good time to examine the live power clutch, while in there.  May have to degrease clutch if seal has caused a lot of oil to be leaked on clutch.  Take your time and check it out.  Good Luck!

Yes, that is the task at hand.

This is where I stopped to ask for advice. When I pulled the whole drive assembly away only the actuator support and actuator assembly remained attached to the differential case.  What is going to happen with the  spring/cap when this is pulled off?

From what I remember from last time I worked on that seal, the actuator stays together once the bolts are taken out the differential.  The bolts I am referring to are in #39 in the diagram.  Bob

BobPaulus, OK. I have three of the four bolts loosened, but the last one has an access issue. I can't get a socket on it - maybe a thin-walled socket might work, but I don't have any of those. Same for my box end wrenches. Looks like I will need to try grinding down an open ended wrench to fit the space available. Do you remember dealing with a similar issue?

Steve(ill) Thanks for the illustrations. Along with the brief narratives, they are quite helpful.

I'm sorry, I don't remember that problem.  If I did have such a problem, I may have used a crowfoot wrench if access is a problem.  I'll have to look at an old CA differential to remember.  Good Luck.  Bob

Item 50 may be pressed in or rusted to part 49.  it is the throwout so inside should turn free from the outside.

Just changed this seal on my CA yesterday. Was not that bad of a job. The actuator came off with the first two bolts. The bearing support bolts were then easy to remove. Did loose about a gallon and a half of new tranny oil, oh well.

Thanks, Mike. It took  to me too long to figure out the 2+2 bolt arrangement. One of those situations of talking(writing) first and thinking later. Got it done and back together. First drive is complete and 24 hours later no sign of leaks. Fingers crossed.

That's great Bob. I've got to get the final drive back together for mine, will be awhile before it's done.
