A grass fire started this morning a few miles south of me. It has now burned over 1,600 acres, 600 houses and a hotel and shopping center. It missed a friend of mine's house but got her daughters house a couple miles away. I rode the school bus through a lot of the burned area back 60 years ago in elementary school. It will be a nightmare for so many people. No rain to speak of since June, 100+MPH winds, the fire moved so fast people could only get out with a few things, and then there are those who are out of town on vacation...

We are supposed to get 5 or 6 inches of snow tomorrow night (Friday) wish it had come two days earlier. Currently the temp is 42 at 7:30 pm, the high tomorrow is supposed to be 30 or less. Wind is still gusting at 25-30 mph.

John, Did you get your snow last night? Pictures on the news of your area look worse than awful. Hope you are OK and prayers for everyone there. It's difficult to imagine how dry you must be with our over-abundance of rain around here lately.

Sad to read this John.
I’ve seen pics from my family in eastern Colorado. So much dirt in the air and 100 mph wind.
Also wondering if you got the needed snow?

Brother and I spoke of this last night, he in Johnstown but scared of winds changes. Scary place to be, Prayer up from here.

Thanks guys. It is snowing right now, first snow to stick on the ground since sometime in April! I'm fairly sure several friends lost their homes, have not seen or heard for absolute certain. If as expected, an old friend has lost her home, along with all her artwork she has done for the last 40 years, and her oldest daughter who lives two miles away also lost her families home, along with her husband's nearly new Tesla, a ford explorer and a motorhome. I did get some good news that a friends house survived with no damage although the barn and fences burned. It's looking like nearly 1,000 homes were lost along with a couple hotels and some business buildings. The Target store has a large hole in the roof but between the fire departments and sprinkler system, didn't burn more. The Costco didn't have any fire damage, most everyone around here shops there so that is good news. About 6,000 acres burned, a lot open space grassland and hay fields but the fire ran over 5 miles from nearly the edge of the mountains to out on the plains, in less then two hours! I was telling someone that in elementary school my school bus drove all through the area of the fire and barely had a bus load of kids, now it would take a couple dozen buses to haul all the kids in the same area. I went out to get the mail earlier and the air smells of burned plastic and I'm 4 miles from the closest the fire got to us.

Glad to hear that you are OK buddy. Have heard from lots of news people of all the devastation and homes that are lost. NOT a very nice end to a chitty year anyway. Prayers go out to all involved.

i have been searching your area hoping you weren't involved in that fire. glad you were spared. i also wondered about that golf course some. i know with the winds there at that time it couldn't be helped that the whole neighborhoods were lost. around here they put the houses so close together that it wouldn't take any wind to lose a whole neighborhood to fire.

Spoke to brother last night,
Local Initial Determination of cause is looking at high winds dislodging power lines, arcing threw sparks and molten wire in those to grass area and wind fanned into flames. Nothing to stop it as progressed.

Same thing that started the 4 County Fire in Central Kansas on December 15. They lost cattle, homes, vechicles, and MILES of fence. We took out a load of small square bales last Thursday along with a goose neck load of Hedge post, Steel Posts and barb wire.

Glad to hear you're alright John. I have a first cousin that lives about a mile away from where that took place. Those poor folks man. What a mess. Happy New Year right? Sheesh! I read over 1000 homes damaged and over 580 homes destroyed. Steve@B&B

Steve, what's your cousin's name? The fire destroyed 991 homes or businesses, damaged 126. The destruction is just unbelievable! Over $25 million in donations so far but the damage will probably be near 1 billion. Looks like the fire started on some property a classmates family once owned.
