Is there a rule of thumb on how to adjust this ? It's my understanding that the purpose is to keep the harrow off the rear tires ? My 3 point has chains for the sway bar . THANKS !!

3pt hitches are not made to be turning with the implement in the ground. Ask Harry Ferguson who designed them. The built in sway is for irregularities. That is why the D15 factory 3pt is basically scrap metal, they are never used as designed. By the time the D17IV came out the engineers figured out how to overcome some of the operator abuse.

sway can be chains, steel links, or bumpers... all serve the same purpose, to keep the 3 point from drifting too far side to side.... couple inches of "free play" is what you want.

I have chains on my WD 45 I adjusted the chains so I have a little slack when the implement is all the way down. When it's all the way up they keep the implement from swaying far enough to hit the tires. You need a little slack so whatever your pulling can follow naturally behind the tractor. If your implement is pulling hard to the side it's not right and needs adjustment. Most often it's twisted so one side is digging deeper than the other. The only exception for me is the backup snow blower I run it with the chains tight when it's all the way on the ground. I just shorten the chains up 2 links on each side.

There is a very good reason why you can buy lower draft arms for Fords and Masseys at the local Farm Supply Store...….it's because they BREAK all the time. Mostly from abuse, yes. But, they are pretty light-duty. A D-15 isn't any better than the Fords or Massey's in that regard.

Guess I should've said I have a Cross 3 point on my D 15 , and I always lift the harrow before turning around . Harrow isn't here , should I adjust the chains with a little slack with lift all the way down ? THANKS !!

Yes, the chains should never be TIGHT . Since the arms travel up and down you will have a loose spot and a snug spot in the chain ... A little SLACK as you said is what you want.. dont put it in a bind.... Swing a couple inches side to side is not a problem.

My D-12 III has a Turnbuckle in each of the Sway Chains.
It takes 16 @ 1/2 turns on each Turnbuckle to take up most of the slack.

Is there any parts yards in your area go there and find some sway chains,old IH tractors had some heavy arms and chains on them,the ones on my Fiat built tractors have very good adjusters and heavy arms.On the arms you can always weld some bracing flat iron on them.

I added a cold link to each sway chain today . Now I have a little slack with lift arms fully down and no implement . I'll check it again when I hook the harrow/disc up . THANKS !!
