Hughes built but ONE, Giant aircraft, amazing as is primarily wooden structure and did actually fly for a moment.  Cool plane.

Quite an achievement, I took the VIP tour in McMinnville where it now calls home. Phenomenal, no nails, they were all pulled after the glue dried, all 8 tons of them, that is where the duplex head nail originated, and a pneumatic hammer to drive and extract them as well. Many people don't know and it is never mentioned that the tail section of the airplane had begun to separate in flight, therefor cutting the flight short, if you look at the later pictures you can see where the tail has been reinforced. I am well over six feet tall and when I entered the flight deck, the main spar is right there and is taller than me by some margin, it is said that the droop in the wings is checked periodically and it has not moved 1/16 since it was built and close to 300 feet unsupported. I sat right in the pilot's seat, right where Mr Hughes sat so many years ago. What an experience!!
