Anyone know what engine this is. I was told it could possibly be a Kohler. All I know is it's pretty old.

Not sure but if you try searching the casting number right above the flywheel it might get you started

My vote is Tecumseh
Tin shrouding is all gone so will run hot until cooks.

Basing on gas tank and flywheel.

cylinder bolts to the crank case block... That is not common on most... Should tell you something.

It is a Wisconsin, the air cooling shroud is gone and that is where the data plate is. Almost indestructible, as proven this has been run with no cooling, they can take almost anything but no oil.
