I just made my first knife. Forged from 5160 coil stock. I had an old 6x48 belt sander I converted to a 2x48 knife grinder. After a few adjustments it worked well. I ground the bevels without any problems. I then heat treated it and that worked well. I was cleaning the carbon/scale off after heat treat. I wedged it between the guide plate and belt. Broke the tip off and ruined my only fine grit belt. I reshaped it and regroups the bevels and finished it. Not near as nice as it was but it’s done. I learned a lot. |

We watch forged in fire a lot. Really have to hand it to the ones that can do that. There is some really beautiful stuff they can do. Hard to find a really good knife anymore that can hold an edge. |

I agree and Forged in fire is the only thing I watch on tv. My wife records so I don’t have to watch commercials. I carry a Buck folder. |

| Neighbor used to make them out of old files and deer sheds. Sadly I never got to watch him work. Congrats on making your first one. They sell very good at the flea markets. Be advised not all flea markets allow the selling of "weapons". If you are thinking of selling at flea markets, please check with the market manager before you travel hours and then find out they don't allow them. Its happened. |

Nice Thad, it surely will hold a edge and be twice as good as all this China garbage that is sold. There's kinda a art to making knives, if you get good you probable won't make them fast enough once word get around. Local guy here makes knives, usually bone handles and does a pretty good job, they hold there edge, not cheap but good! He lives east of McCracken, KS now and was actually on forged in fire. He won the competition. He called me to get some bees and he told me he had won and they really questioned him on how he tempered the blade. He thought they thought he used something he wasn't supposed too, but he hadn't. He told me what he used (greek to me) and it was more of a sword not a knife but when he was done he could bend the blade almost into a U and it would go back straight. Funny thing when he told me he said he wasn't supposed to say nothing until the episode aired or he would loose his prize money, so he said don't say nothing. Of course I didn't but everyone in the county that knew him was not saying anything too. That’s awesome. A guy from near here who is also a member of the same Blacksmith group as I also won. Funny thing is I haven’t met him yet. I have a cousin that makes knives for a living. Le left his job as an electrician to go full time. They’re out of my price range but sell as fast as he can make them. He’s also sold one design to a large maker and makes money off that as well. |
