Need to adjust the valves.  Has anyone found a Cold measurement that will work? Or is there just to many variables on the expansion of the metal parts to do it that way?

.013 is the suggested setting for a Hot adjustment.

Thanks

I remember DrAllis giving a number, possibly .015 cold. I'm sure he'll chime in and confirm or correct.

Fantastic - that makes it much easier.

Thanks.

I have always used the same.             MACK

As a follow up, I've always been curious as to why some manufacturers set valve clearance specs hot, and others cold.  My Cat D2 specs the valves hot, while my old Triumph motorcycle uses cold.  Is it just a convenience, or is it more fundamental to different engine designs and materials?

I have always felt that trying to do the settings while "hot" are inconsistent, because of the time it takes from beginning to end. It never really stays "hot". Setting when cold at least sees to it everything should be the same from beginning to end and it's much easier to do without burning your fingers.

I've all ways done cold. If the spec is for hot add .002. Some say hot, some say cold, some say running. Been to many years, but there was one IH gas 6cyl engine we went .004 over the cold spec other wise it seemed to burn valves.

Deutz says the clearance gets greater on their engine as they heat up. They say to set valves at room temp. after setting over night.
Clearance gets less on most engines as they heat up .               MACK

What's the cold "set and forget" setting on an 8070...about ready to put the head back on.

I have always went .018. We don't all feel a feeler gauge the same. Don't think .001 will matter.            MACK

I need to narrow up a feeler cause the rockers have a small amount of wear on the valve contact and a normal gauge is too wide.

Guess it's the season for setting valves.  I just did this on the D17, went with the 015 cold.  Thanks!

I need to check my valves on my D17 after just replacing the head gasket. Setting them cold would seem to be the easiest and cleanest way of doing it. Thanks for the information. Ryan

Just talking about setting valve lash, reminds me that every one has a different feel, I guess as long as the same feel for each valve is used it’s ok
When I went through Diesel school, many years ago, my instructor would make us run several overheads, and say he told us .015 was the setting. He would come by with a 15 and a 16 feeler gauge. He would first use the .016 and he would force it from different angles bending the gauge, he was pushing that hard. If the .016 gauge managed to go in he would fail you. So I remember how hard it was to get the valves set and pass with him. Also these valves had been set thousands of times in a school setting. I don’t go to that much trouble setting them now and never had a problem, but I sure remember him pushing as hard as he could on a feeler gauge.001 to big and bending it to see if you passed to his standard. He said if he could get it under it, that was what it was set at. Glad I don’t work for him.
Sorry I know this didn’t add anything to the post but it made me remember being taught how.
Everyone has a different feel when setting valves, or it seems that way to me.
