Run the 6.7 Cummins/Ram I use for hotshot into the shop for new front hubs at a dealer I trust. Walk down the hall and chat with the sales manager and we start discussing the lack of new trucks and I tell him some dealers I see in my cross country travels have 8 - 10 empty spaces between pickups on their lots, except the Japs who still have some hefty truck inventories.
Sales manager advises that factory is taking orders for 2020 year models and he had put many on order, but the factory does give a price as yet.
So I ask the guy what is going to happen with all the 2021 models sitting at the plants while waiting on chips, and how he thinks the plants will incentivize dealers to take them when chips catch up as the 2022's will also be hitting the market in late August (if they can get the chip shortage sorted soon enough).
He advises that other than govt. mandated safety devices, prior truck systems are being "streamlined" to reduce chips in the new 2022 pickups for Dodge.
He then asked if I had ever seen a loaded Lariat model with a manual sliding bench seat, then advised "you will soon as anything they can delete chips for will be plain Jane" for the new 2022's.
Used pickup prices for 3/4 ton and up are thru the roof as no new trucks to sell. Offered me what I paid for my used Ram last year if I would trade it in on a new one but could not give a delivery date for any 2022's.
I'll stay with the ol' gal, money in the bank in my book . . . . .

It isn't just pickups and ton or slightly bigger trucks, it is ALL including Class 8 trucks unable to move product as no chips to complete.  Dealer lots are emptier than had been for twenty years, the heavy industry trucking companies that make orders YEARS in advance are now straggling out what should have been trade ins for months where warranties have ended and major repair expenses are encroaching where those repairs as well have NO PARTS to repair them as no chips to produce them yet no replacement trucks in the wings.

It’s usually covered

yeah chip 'shortage'.... please give me a break.... I've been in the design/build microcomputer gig for 4+decades and there is NO shortage. Same SCAM as the $12 2by4. LOTS of stock, just a LOT of 'profiteering' going on.
What's no one has said in the few 'reports' I've scanned is WHAT specific 'chips' they're talking about. Unlikely the ECU...it's typically a 'generic' part used in most makes/model lines today. That leaves the junk in the 'cab', the 'infocenter'  which from my bench is not that complicated. few buttons, a screen, CANbus, connectors...easypeazzy.... I can get a 'computer' delivered in less than 4 weeks, once I send them my 'design'.
I suspect the 'problem' is the 'computers' are only from ONE MFR,something no normal OEM will allow.

Regardless the reason there is a "shortage " and the dealer price gouging is on. Recently saw an ad from a local biggy for a 2500HD two years older than mine and $10000 more than what I paid ten years ago

Maybe they will rethink the need for CHIPS..... Dont really think you need one for heat and air cond / seats / windows..... maybe the engine and trans shifting... but i even question that.

Read somewhere a while back that the average vehicle now has 12 chips.

Chips are not the only thing affecting product availability/sales. I used to greet folks with "how's business", or "how are you today" when picking up/dropping freight but started getting an ear full a few months back and it was always the same.
"Would be a helluva lot better if we could get our employees to come back to work" became the standard reply.
Working KC east, there is already shortages of stuff so it will be an interesting summer for sure.
Now saying that it's not just life guards in "short supply", but shortage of chlorine for large public pools in larger cities.
People are getting pi$$ed and tempers will flare as the heat increases.
Murder rates up in major cities, etc.

Smooth move by Joe, cuttin checks until end of September in an effort to buy future votes, glad to see so many states cutting back those federal  "bennies" as this country needs to get back to work . . . . . .

Local used car dealer always has 20-30 late model and program cars on lot. When China flu kicked in last summer he was down to 5-10 on the lot. Could not buy & sell and make any money. Things picked up into late fall early winter. After Sleepy took over it all went to h#ll. Last month took all he had left to auction and sold well over what locals would pay. He's not out of business yet...but has nothing on the lot. "Elections have consequences."

Wink TV propaganda got me down so stopped watching, pick up most things on local radio. Local car talk show on radio, I believe it is true but have not checked. Musk build a plant to make chips in Germany, did not follow "conservation protocol's" enviro wackos burned his almost complete factor down this week.

The implication was he cut corners to get chip for his cars. But would of been a good money maker to be able to sell chips to the meet demand. LOL

I have a 2013 F150.... 8 years old.... The COMPUTER decides if the alternator should charge the battery or not !!!  It monitors the OUT amps and adjusts the IN amps to the battery to match........ Put it on a trickle charger / battery charger and you really SCREW WITH ITS MIND !!

Back in the early 80s when Motorola(now On Semi) decided I HAD to buy 10,000 pcs of the then 'hot' 68HC11, I 'jumped ship' and went to Microchip and have never looked back. Rock soild  'chips',original ones( I still have some) had quartz windows to allow UV to erase them, over time they've gotten  way better, faster, smarter AND I can buy 1 or a million, Microchip does NOT have a shortage.
The problem is the 'engineers' and 'bean counters' and '3 letter' men can't(or won't)  think 'outside the box' and use another vendor's product. "car computers" ain't that smart or sophisticated. Oddly enough, not much about 42 volt cars these days..THAT was going to be the next major improvement.....yawn.....
What's mildly interesting to me, is that not ONE actual computer chip or semiconductor  device is reported as 'unavailable', just  a generic 'word' NOT a true part number.
Smoke and mirrors, something to jack up the prices, create a demand, though like the 4 door E-stang, it'll fail to sell.

Things were a lot better when a truck was a truck Thumbs Up not an entertainment center Thumbs Down You turned the key and it went Smile no need for anything controlled by a computer Angry You had a crank to roll the windows up and down Big smile and to lock the door you pushed down a button Wink Nowadays if the battery fries on you or you're in an accident that kills the power, you're trapped inside and can't get out Censored And who needs a back up camera Confused that's what mirrors are for Tongue And if you wanted to move the seat, there's a lever for that Approve not and electric motor to burn out Wacko For those that think they need a seat warmer, PUT SOME CLOTHES ON Star Didn't your Mama teach you not to go out of the house in -20 degree weather with nothing more on than a tank top, pair or shorts and flipflops Sick If today's trucks didn't have all the useless crap that needs to be controlled with chips and computers Dead they would be reasonably priced and available Hug Maybe with the average person of today, there is a need for self leveling air shocks for when there's only a driver in the truck to keep it from leaning to the left LOL

Current State of the Art Electronics packages work on CAN-BUS systems.  Multiple Processors all talking to one another to operate the machine under you.  Very few systems operate independently where even lights or simple controls like blower speed only signal to a processor to operate that mechanism.  Lighter wiring, more processors, TONS more training to use new tech diagnostics that usually CANNOT pinpoint anything.

When out of warranty these can be the most expense to a auto owner, for dealers they are a Warranty cash cow until warranties end.  The most common malfunctions are shorts and bad grounds which can lead to any number of malfunctions and are not easily discernable as to where is broken.

I ordered my truck (2021 Ford F-350) on Friday, January 29, 2021.I picked it up on Tuesday, March 20. It was actually at the Ford dealer sometime the week before, but I was out of town. The dealer told me if I had waited another two weeks before ordering, I probably wouldn't have got it for months.

I traded in a 2016 F-350 Lariat diesel with 56,000 miles. The dealer had it listed on their website for $56,600. The truck was $68,000 new in 2016 ! It is now gone off their website and it is not on their lot.

Ford has so many Super Duty trucks built at their Kentucky Super Duty plant that they have rented some of the parking lots at Kentucky Speedway and the stored new trucks can be seen from space.  https://www.thedrive.com/news/40458/thousands-of-unfinished-ford-super-duty-trucks-are-parked-at-kentucky-speedway-due-to-chip-shortage" rel="nofollow - https://www.thedrive.com/news/40458/thou........t-kentucky-speedway-due-to-chip-shortage

This whole microchip doesn't seem to be getting any better, according to this article.

"If you listen to Ford, BMW, Volkswagen, they all highlighted that there’s bottlenecks in capacity and they can’t get the chips they need to manufacture the new cars,” he said, adding that he thinks it will go on for 18 months.

Taiwan is, by far, the biggest supplier of microchips. (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and United Microelectronics being the biggest.)

As with many products, production was slowed by COVID. Since microchips are used in almost all electronics (including smart phones, computers, gaming systems, appliances, etc.), production just can't keep up with demand as things open up.

It isn't just a US problem. Automakers and manufacturers around the world have cut or stopped production because of the microchip shortage.

I'm wondering how they get the vehicles into the parking lots if they are missing chips.  Maybe they aren't necessary to drive it out of the factory or do they have to plug in something to move it then remove it for the next one?
My arms must have gotten shorter or something but it sure is nice to have a power window on the passenger side at least.

SE Asia, Malaysia to be precise makes the base wafers for the chips, the Taiwan company takes a blank wafer and etches or imprints the chip structure on the blank wafer.  No wafers or slow delivery and no chips or slow delivery.

Wife worked some 22 years for MEMC Monsanto Electronics Materials Corporation in St Peters MO making said wafers, they were top of the mark of technology until 2005, then it was all being shipped to Malaysia.  Plant closed and she was laid off is why we moved to Hermann.

Are still a number of chips being produced, just nowhere near enough to feed our auto sales lines.

How many embedded processors does your car have? Go ahead, guess. If you've got a late-model luxury sedan, two or three processors might be obvious in the GPS navigation system or the automatic distance control. Yet you'd still be off by a factor of 25 or 50. The current 7-Series BMW and S-class Mercedes boast about 100 processors apiece. A relatively low-profile Volvo still has 50 to 60 baby processors on board. Even a boring low-cost econobox has a few dozen different microprocessors in it. Your transportation appliance probably has more chips than your Internet appliance.

The statistics are startling. New cars now frequently carry 200 pounds of electronics and more than a mile of wiring. Processors and their peripherals have squeezed into the side- and rear-view mirrors, wheel rims, headliner, gas tank, seat cushions, headrests, bumpers, and every other crevice of a modern car. Dashboard electronics such as the radio, air conditioning, and satellite navigation system are just the obvious ones. Even more MIPS and MHz are lurking under the surface.

For example, the radio on many cars talks to the automatic transmission over an in-car network. Why? So the radio can automatically adjust its volume in relation to road noise (which is a function of speed). The airbag accelerometer, parking lights, GPS navigation, cell phone, and door locks also network so that in a serious accident, the car calls for emergency aid, sends the GPS coordinates of the accident, unlocks the doors, and flashes the car's lights. Side mirrors get a cue from the transmission so that when the driver shifts into reverse, the mirrors bend down and inward, the better to provide a view of what you're backing into.

I'm thinking it will take a year or more for things to get back to "normal".

It's very easy to blame the politicians (from either side) or government, but a lot of the shortages, or sharply increased demand, are the results of the pandemic.

Plants were closed, airlines weren't flying, no one was renting cars and overall demand for a petroleum and a lot of other things was way down, with no one knowing when, or what, the new "normal" would be. Production or supply of a lot of things was slowed down and it is going to take a while for production and supply to meet the present demand.

Fella I know in NH ordered a new (GM) work truck; dealer called three weeks later to tell him they couldn’t give a delivery date due to chip shortage. The key fob!

Told him if he went up a level on trim that had pushbutton starting, he could get a truck. $8000 upgrade.

On the other hand, I ordered a new Ram Cummins at the same time, and it’s ready at the dealer.

This is far from over, GM said it was seeing a trickle return of processor chips but they are still on the short end.  There is talk of reductions of the load of processors in machines as this is NUTS, will see where that goes.

Our 2017 Exploder has 14 processors in it that speak to each other and manage the car.  My 2010 Pimpala has three.  The last semi I looked at was a Freightliner Cascadia, had 17 and a SAM Module to manage all the rest, worthless crap when fails and do so repetitively.

My 2012 Harley has but two processors, buddy of mine has a 2015 similar looking machine, has Seven, working everything but clutch and shifting.

Here is a good example... 20 years ago i had a MECHANICAL battery charger.... Today i have a 19v battery powered drill that "something" went wrong with the "BATTERY"... i open it up and it has a  CIRCUIT BOARD inside with the battery cells... It measures the battery voltage, charger voltage, rate of charge, any bad cells, anyone trying ti BYPASS the system, time to charge, etc, etc..... here is the "BOARD".... i count 16 CHIPS inside to do all the work.. Some are very small and probably just ON-OFF switches or timers, but still.... 16 CHIPS to charge a BATTERY !

I worked on commercial ice makers since the mid 70’s, I could fix most any machine with either a pressure switch, timer or a thermostat, no electronics necessary. New energy standards changed that, now, Manitowoc uses a microphone, (about the size of a 3/16” watch battery), in the water stream and puts the unit into harvest based on a predetermined decibel setting made by the fracturing ice. I’m sure that alone requires a couple of chips not counting all the rest of the stuff it does.

Steve, yes a LOT of 'stuff' to charge that pack. Typical, welcome to the Lithium-Ion battery world. EACH cell, yours has 5, needs to be individually monitored and charged, else...well. 'bad' things can happen. Also some mfrs chargers 'look' at the 'battery pack' and test if it's one of theirs. If not, the charger will NOT recharge the battery. Inkjet printers were/are like this, there's a 'chip' IN the ink cartridge, so you have to buy THEIR ink carts. well, unless you reverse engineer what 'they' did, then you can use anyone's cart.
If you want to be truly amazed or dumbfounded, have a look at the actual schematics for any E-car 'battery pack' !

My orchard business partner's late father in law, Jack Kilby, invented the microprocessor in the late 1950's while everyone else at TI was on Christmas break, (he was a new hire).  Anyway, he won the Noble prize for science and was interviewed by a reporter from Time magazine who asked if he now had any regrets for his discovery.  He mentioned the use of chips in Land Mines but what seemed silly to him was the birthday card his sister sent him that sang "Happy Birthday" when he opened it.  That was 20 plus years ago...

Jack Kilby's Office (memorialized) is downstairs from mine. He worked through the summer shutdown to create one substrate with capacitor, resistor, inductor and some transistors built on top of it. The first integrated circuit. He said he didn't think about appearances of his device other than it worked. He said if I would have known the impact of it, I would have prettied it up some...

So my brother in Upstate NY has been tossing around the idea of trading in his loaded GMC 2500 gasser 4WD and getting another diesel. 2015 GMC just turned 20K on the clock and dealers are now offering what he paid for it new but they want a pretty penny for a Ram or Duramax used with 50 - 100K miles.
We chat often while I'm on the road and I've told him he is crazy to get rid of the GMC gasser as it's still like new but he likes to call and relay conversations he has with dealers.
A while back I asked him to feel these dealers out on what they are going to do with all the 2021 models waiting on chips and what this will do to the regular roll-out date for the 2022's.
Last week he asked a large dealer that question and advised the GM dealer told him that GM had advised just that morning that all 2021 model pickups that eventually get shipped will be registered as 2022 year models.
Something tells me that lawyers will be getting involved with this one, if in-fact true.

Can happen
Very similar to Farm machines and heavy equipment where as stay in producers inventory are not date coded until sold.

My 180d was built in 1973 according to a local dealer owner that still had some reference books, said was not sold until 1975 so is listed as a 1974 which is as convoluted as it can get.

Several older Cat machines I had worked on had date stamps that showed them 2-4 years older than the s/n code reports showed them to be.
Inventory is new until delivered to a customer.

Probably, but I doubt they will get any traction.

A good indicator of the real date can be found by checking the date on the tires.

If they don’t change the VIN that will tell you what year it is. I have a 2017 F-350 that had 2017 window sticker and has a 2018 VIN which tells me it was probably built the last two weeks of production of 2017 before they switched to 2018 production.

I ordered a chevy 2500 hd 4 wd Work truck with a Z71 offroad package Feb 2nd 2021. Dealer told me 10 to 12 weeks. That came and gone. Dealer finally calls and says that the plant sent them an email saying no work trucks (WT) until October and will be 2022 models. He claimed that an upgrade to LT package 2500$ more and truck should get built by August. Time will tell . Was hoping to get new truck before I head out west in late August.

sounds like 'bait and switch'....
Now IF dealer 'ate' the $2500 upgrade AND the truck DID arrive July(next month...) maybe accept that deal, otherwise, get deposit back, shop elsewhere.
Thing is ,with all the inventory being in a 'computer', they KNOW exactly where all the trucks are ,at least in Canada. There could be 'your truck', one state over, in another color, sitting on a lot for past 3 months........

From what my Ford dealer is telling me, if you start over, it may well be a year before you get a truck. He said they are not giving an expected delivery date to anyone looking for a new truck right now.

I ordered my truck January 29, 2021. I picked it up April 20 (it was in the week before, but I was out of town). The general manager told me if I had waited two weeks later to order, I probably wouldn't have got the truck until fall.

I really feel bad for the dealers. I deal with a local dealership. They are straight shooters and members of our community. They have a good business, but very few vehicles to sell.

No dealer is going to eat a $2500 upgrade, especially with supply being so bad. They actually have waiting lists of customers looking for vehicles. Several local new car dealers are actually buying used cars, so they have something to sell.

Jay, you need to take a look at local dealers. There are no vehicles sitting on any dealer lots for 3 months. I recently heard of a dealer that has a selling price of $5000 over sticker price for a new truck.

The value of used vehicles is way up, because demand is way up, due to the lack of new vehicles. I traded in a 2016 F-350 Lariat 4x4 diesel with 56,000 miles. The dealer had it listed for $56,600 (sticker was $64,800 new).

So true WF, the local dealers are really taking a beating. 2 of them have taken the opportunity to seal coat their lot, almost no cars to move. It’s nuts. A couple people I know have ran into a dealer or salesman off hours and they offer to buy your car on the spot. I’m beginning to wonder how long they will stay in business, it’s not like there’s huge numbers move in this area to begin with.

Was hoping to get a better vehicle for my son before he went to Mississippi, price on the model we were looking at went up 15% in a two to three week period. (Used)

There is a good article on Yahoo News today about causes of the semiconductor shortage.

Here is a little of the gist of it.

Many factors conspired to cause the semiconductor shortage that’s constraining the production of cars and many other products. The coronavirus pandemic massively disrupted supply chains. Remote workers stocked up on chip heavy computers and other gizmos. Same with bored consumers doing more streaming and gaming. Fires at two Japanese chip plants cut into supply. Then a surprisingly strong recovery produced demand far more robust than manufacturers expected.

In 2018, as part of the trade war with China, the USA imposed 25% tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese imports, including semiconductors—the first of several salvos in the trade war with China. Those tariffs are still in effect, and chip imports from China have fallen by half as the price has gone up

China now accounts for only about 5% of imported semiconductors, according to research firm Panjiva. But imports from other countries have not gone up to offset the lost supply from China. A 5% contraction in supply during a shortage can have outsized effects.

In 2019, the USA banned the sale of American-made components, including semiconductors, to the Chinese telecom giant Huawei, in an effort to disenfranchise the maker of networking gear and smartphones. That had several undesirable consequences. For one, it created a disincentive to make chips in the United States because producers couldn’t sell them to one of the world’s largest customers. Huawei begin to get chips from suppliers in Japan and South Korea that weren’t subject to the ban. China also boosted its own production of chips, and it began hoarding them, in case the U.S. action intensified. The U.S. semiconductor industry says the actions cost U.S. firms millions in sales

The trade actions were meant to address legitimate Chinese abuses. But this unilateral approach left China many escape hatches while causing substantial collateral damage. The fiasco contributed to the current shortages, hurting American businesses and workers
