They are saying that the price of chicken is on the rise. What is the price of chickens from the farm doing going up also? I believe Hubert said that they was wanting chickes 5 lbs. lighter. They are also saying there is a shortage on chicken wings. Do they have wing less chickens now?

Cost of feed, cost pf power to keep them alive, ALL costs have risen including finding workers that will accept a REAL paycheck to monitor and raise them.

article May 8 ...
"There is a lot of chicken being produced, but we are seeing restaurants that aren't getting as much supply as they want to get," Texas Agrilife Extension economist David Anderson said. "There is plenty of chicken, but when you have all these chains making chicken biscuits and chicken sandwiches, which are a hot product right now, and they're all made of chicken breasts, there is only so much of those specific cuts to go around."While restaurants and supermarkets worked through the supply challenges, ag producers and vendors like Les Ray struggled with another challenge -- the price of feed."Our vendors tell me there's a shortage of milo, corn and soybeans," Ray said. "I've got a list of before and after. They've gone up two times this week, 50 cents to $2."The challenge for Ray and his staff at Ray's feed on Houston's south side is not keeping the customers happy. Instead it's keeping up with the constant changes lately."In the last few months, corn and soybean prices have really increased," said Texas A&M poultry expert Craig Coufal. "About 90% of what we feed a chicken is corn and soybean meal for the calories and the protein. That cost must be passed on in the final price of product.""For our hen scratch here, this is mixed with chopped corn and then this little round ball, that's your protein ball," said Ray's employee Mistie Martin. "That's what helps your chicken gain weight."Experts say supplies of chickens and feed will eventually even out with the demand once more birds grow to maturity."The birds that were being grown during the pandemic were grown smaller because they were going to end up in grocery stores," Anderson said. "The birds that meet the demand for chicken strips and sandwiches and processed nuggets are much bigger, and it can take some time to shift production. It will happen, but it may take some time."

That was probably Tyler that said they were wanting them lighter, but I think 5# would be too much of a cut. About a year ago I think Tyler said they were paying a bonus for extra weight.
Around here chicken wings (buffalo wings) are popular and the price has gone up a lot. I love the Ragin' Cajun hot wings at a local place called Blazers. They will burn you twice. I am also fond of grilled chicken thighs and those have not increased in price that much.
You can be sure that the farmers are not the ones benefiting from the higher meat prices. I am going to start buying most of my beef from a local producer so all of my money can go directly to him and his family.

Boy howdy ain't that the truth. The last time the farmers had a raise that I know of was about 4 years ago and it was $0.005/lb. Then they cut the placement (number of birds per square foot) so the raise didn't really do anything. Our parent company wants a 4.35 to 4.4 lb bird because that's what the customer requires. They say that size bird gives the breast size that they desire to make their product efficiently. Basically they don't have to add steps to get rid of excess meat.
We get paid by the average live weight of the whole farm. The parent company provides chicks, feed, and transport. We provide housing, utilities, and labor. Where the bonus comes from is our average cost being lower than the other farms. After our birds are taken to the plant, they figure the bird weight, % of livability, and feed conversion. That gives them the total pounds and cost per pound. A bigger bird with a lower feed conversion will have a lower cost. Once they figure the average cost for all the farms that sold that week they rank the farms. Farms that have the average cost for the week make their contract pay. Farms that have an above average cost are said to finish below average and have that amount subtracted from their pay. Farms that finish with a lower cost are said to finish above average and have the money lost added to their pay. For example, let's say my birds cost the parent company $0.2000/lb. That means it cost the parent company $0.2000/lb to bring me chicks, feed, and catch and haul back to the processing plant. Let's say Hubert had a higher feed conversion and his cost was $0.2020/lb. If my cost was average for the week then Hubert would be 20 points below average and $0.0020/lb would be taken from his pay and added to the farms that finished above average. In short, no the farmer doesn't see that money.

Corn at 6:50 a Bushel, beans at $14.00 + per bushel. Son is a manager for the largest chicken producer in the US. The only dependable labor they can get is convict labor. The guys are bussed in from the prisons. Most days he's there 16 hours a day. Price of eggs is so low its not profitable to produce them. The last 6 months things have gone from very good to very bad.

I talked with a manager from "the parent company" today and he said the plant is running at about 60% capacity because there's nobody there to work. I guess it's the same everywhere. I'd say that's where the shortage is coming from

That comment reminds me of a little banjo picking town about 10 miles south of me. It's incorporated because it has a post office and of course a bar. A few residents have pigs penned up on there front yard. OK I can go with that, not many residents, who cares. It's when I started talking to a friend of a friend that needed his truck fixed that lived down by there. This is what stuck "We don't eat chicken cause it's n!!!!!r food". I will never forget that. Never went to the bar either

Sadly, when "we" (wife/son and myself) go to a restaurantthat serves "chicken" on the menu, the wife ALWAYS picks that "dinner" that takes 20 more minutes to "bring out" to the table as opposed to a "red meat" offering

"Meat" is Animal Protein, Chickens or fowl, or birds of ANY type are Animals and as such provide a "Meat" protein material.
You can claim as you want but Meat is a Animal based protein material and chicken remains as such. Great Aunt raised chickens for eggs and meat, raised boilers and fryers as some were only good for cooking down the others tender and juicy when fried. The "White" Meat.

Please don't set yourself up as such a easy target. But since many think we need to be kinder and .
I raise beef not chickens, never thought turkey was a treat. But in latter life there are reasons for more poultry less red meat ( gout being the biggest) . Dry old white meat turkey sounds down right wonderful, as to eating lab grow goo they call man made meat.
Yes rear poultry is not in the same as rear steak. But there are some things that can raise experience of eating chicky up a bunch. Marinating chicky in wine and spices at least overnight, grilling for some smoke, then finishing by melting butter into marinate and putting this and chicky in pot to steam until well done. It is not that old dry chicky. But probably is not that super low fat, low cholesterol ether.

Commercial eggs or breeder eggs? Breeders is something you can make a lot of money at but you have birds ALL the time. We grow birds for around 40 days. They have birds for almost a year

Two reasons for chicken prices going up. One, the current ongoing chicken sandwich battles. Two, The high demand for buffalo wings. The buffalo's ran out so they had to start using chicken wings!

Jenny asked me to stop at the store on my way home from work recently. I walked by the meat department. They had 3 big briskets. Each was over $100.00 I thought it was ridiculous when they hit $30.00

The Fruits and Nuts are looking to help the rest of the country, do a cloistral overload. Back in 18 we pasted a initiative about animal care and such. Each hen needs more room as well as sows and no farrowing crates. So in a year or 2 if you folks in fly over country don't do as Fruits and Nuts want no more bacon and eggs other than grown in state. Which is only about 15% of what is now consumed here.
So that should make all that goodness much cheaper for the rest of you. I guess I can grow my own have done it before. Just you factory farmers do it so I don't have to work that hard no more.
An I was trying to be funny. I am not really calling any of you factory farmers just another slap in the face to all us farmers by Fruits and Nuts being dumb as normal.

Holy crap! How much would one weigh? | Not sure but now you have me curious. If I get to town I’m gonna go see what they weigh or what they sell for per pound. I’ll report my findings if I get in there.
