That would be interesting history. Knowing something about the first one would also be cool.

And its a gas engine. Seams the last one should have all options on it, PS and diesel at least.

At that time in history, I'd be willing to wager that was thee most popular configuration....gas....wide front.....no power steering......14.9 rear rubber.

Doc, any idea how much PS and a Diesel engine would have cost as an option? If it was like cars in the day PS was probably a $35 option, which was a lot cash in those days.

Mike that was quick! Surprised me $147 for PS! Wow, way more than I thought. $680 diesel upgrade, a lot of cash back then.

yea that’s my grandfather as a dealer buying them. Not sure what the mark up. We haven’t found any of the sales stuff. I believe these early ones he went to the rail station and unloaded off rail cars.
Sorry dean to hijack

Gas WD-45's at $0.56 per pound, gas CA's at $0.54 per pound. What a bargain!

The diesel is 6 cylinder, vs 4 for the gas. A diesel fuel system vs gas (carb, distributor and governor).  Is the diesel's governor integral to the injection pump?
Anyway the diesel WD-45 rig is about  $0.68 per pound.

My boss once told me to always do a cost per pound analysis on any hunk of machinery under consideration, and compare to others on the market.

In Search Of: 1958 Allis Chalmers D17 Diesel serial #9643D

Just picked up a very late serial number 45, was doing some searching, found it rather interesting that the last one built now has and inhood dash and diesel battery box. When right here is the ORIGINAL picture of the tractor, not matching what it currently has. Was rumored that left over parts was used to build them and the last one. Appears to not be the case.

In 1985 it was "Allis Chalmers". Now it is alice chambers. He who yells the loudest and has the biggest guns determines correct history. Just my point of view.

I agree Lon, it’s nice to see pictures like this pop up, hard to argue with it.

It's been known that there is someone out there That builds special number tractors to show off at shows. There's one that has been sold to a rube who thinks he has a pre-production tractor that looks nothing like the archival photos that any of us can look at in books about Allis Chalmers history.  Got number stamps? just know your up from down Wink

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

It’s sad honestly. Anything for cash.

In the case on this one, it’s simply just been changed over the years. I wouldn’t doubt that they wanted to use up left over parts, but the last one sure didn’t leave the factory that way. The one I just picked up is a 236 serial number, don’t remember that last 3 digits, will on Saturday, nothing special, just a late 45 with wide front and power steering.

I don't believe Allis Chalmers would cobble a tractor together just to used left over parts. It would be noted in the parts books and I'm sure the company didn't have time for cobble work when selling several thousand tractors every year. I believe extra parts would likely just go into their parts inventory for sale to dealerships as needed. They just didn't stop making the parts for a WD45 when production of the WD45 stopped. Parts were made for a long time after.
