I've been using Hitachi 14231 alternators on 12 volt conversions for Farmall Cubs and As. I actually have two Super As in the barn due up for the conversion. And two alternators just showed up from RockAuto yesterday. The remaining parts should be here today or tomorrow. |

| i installed a Denso on my D15. It did not spin up fast enough to charge so had to add a 2nd wire and resistor to it. Been working great since then and tucks away in the motor and under the sheet metal. |

I would say the "FACTORY" alternators are not 1 wire... The "aftermarket" 1 wire alternators are popular with hot rodders... Who makes alternators for Toyota? In order to run the wide 5/8" belt, you'll need to purchase a pulley for the small mainshaft the Denso has. We have the pulleys in stock along with the Alternators if interested. | What are the pros and cons of 1 wire alternators on an old tractor? If you are going to update it would be the easiest way to do so. I have one on my old Camaro and like it. Eliminated lots of wires and voltage regulator. Charges at idle but idle speed on that engine is 850 rpm. |

| Thx Jay. So all that I know. Any alt on WD45 or CA is not original. My question is will a 1 wire work okay or are the 3 wire ones better and why. I may do some tests on Camaro and see what rpm the charge slows down or stops. Steve in NJ probably already knows. 😀 |

1 wire 'senses' battery level AT alternator NOT at the battery whereas a 3 wire unit actually does 'sense' the battery level at the battery. Also a 3 wire unit allows for an 'idiot' light. It comes on before starting, then off while running. Break the fan belt it'll come on.... Some say a 1 wire alt needs a small pulley, to spin faster to tell it to charge. I use the CS130 series 3 wire alts for old GM cars(cavaliers) as I have 5-6 of them,free, on the shelf. Hello, I am new parent to a WD, ..... not sure of year yet, I think a '51. While initially running the tractor to load and bring home, the pully on the alternator blew apart. Looking to hopefully just buy a pulley from my local napa store, I ended up just getting a whole new unit. Come to find out the belt is approx 0.60" wide, the pulley is much too small. Not sure if I should run a narrower belt. Came across your posting and am interested in sizing up my pulley. Not sure the brand of the alternator yet, I'll run out and look. Is there any other information you would need? or maybe direction you could point me in? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading.

For those replacing the generators with alternators, an alternator will drain the battery to nothing when not run for long periods. So for stored tractor, you'd need to remember to dis-connect the battery for long term storage. Unlike a generator system that has a cutout in the voltage regulator that does this automatically. When I was using my tractors on a regular basis, I was doing the alternator thing. Now that most of the sit more than they're used, I've been putting generators back on like they should have. ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. If you visit our website, and go down the header all the way to the right, you'll see "more". A drop down window will appear and look for "More Techical info". There is plenty to read on 12V conversions, the different Alternators, and one wire vs 3 wire information. Leave the one wire Alternators to Automobiles. A three wire system works fine on all Tractors. I use the three wire system on my hotrods also. You get a much better operating charging system hooking up two more wires. It isn't that tough.... If you connect a one wire Alternator directly to the Battery, an Alternator will drain the Battery in time. If you set up the system for a 3 wire through the key switch like my systems are designed, you won't have a drain problem. Whenever a Tractor sits for a long period of time, its always good to add a Battery Tender to keep the Battery active and keep the longevity of the Battery. This way when the time comes to use the Tractor, the engine fires right up and everything is up to snuff like it was used the day before. A nice addition also would be to install a Battery switch for those Tractors that sit a long time till called upon for certain work chores... Steve@B&B
