What makes him So special?
Are hundreds of as or more serious accidents daily but he is doted over as something special

‘Just in recovery rehab for most recent back surgery’ so I would imagine Oxy or some other narcotic use for pain and should NOT have been driving.

What makes him so special?  Have any of us here won the Masters, 15 major championships and 82 total professional golf tournaments?  Didn't think so.

I don't care either, not a golf fan.  But millions are, and millions are interested, so it gets on the news.  If you're not interested, tune it out, why bitch?

i actually watched a lot of CNN as they weren't Trump bashing... though I suppose THAT was his fault too ? haven't watched TV today, too nice, warmish and SUNNY,for now.
It's  pretty dang OBVIOUS what happened once you SAW the road 'uphill'....
He came down it real FAST, lost control, 'removed' a pole, the flipped over..down the hill.
NOBODY said that OR the MAKE of the car...just that it was a freebie from the golf tournament.

He's LUCKY to be alive, seriouly doubt he'll ever swing a club again

as for all the media coverage...simple BLACK privalege, same as OJ .

I have mixed feelings about all of  these "safety" items on cars now, auto parking, lane assist, auto driving cars, etc.   All they do is give "drivers".... or steerers as they become, a false sense of safety and that they are now justified in looking at that cell phone or other not paying attention activities, as the car will take care of doing it and alert them.  It is all a part of the dumbing down of the people.  What happens if those electronic gadgets fail, and then you have to regain control, people won't know what to do because they've thought it isn't necessary.

Posted By: jaybmiller

The ONE 'safety' item I want to see mandated into EVERY vehicle would be a 'local cell phone jammer'. There's ZERO need for any driver at ANY time driving the vehicle to be yammering on the phone. None, zero, zip, zilch, rien.

In response to the OP, he is an accomplished athlete. Won a few championships, etc. No different than Brady, Rogers, etc, except golf isn't much of a team sport, one wins or looses pretty much on his own (the caddy does help some).
But, he became a hero (an over used term, especially here) to me when he pretty much told Billy Clinton to bugger off!

Stop and think how much pressure he is under from the way his father raised him. I have not really looked close as I have no interest in the sports culture of North America. But I would bet he never had a childhood to run and play and do dumb stuff kids do. His father put a golf club in his hands at being able to stand and he did nothing much but practice golf.

I don't give him a pass on all the things he has done. But do hope he finds some peace in life without it coming from drugs or alcohol.

Part of the warped culture now. Any sports star, move star, etc. stubs their toe and it is all over the news. True very few make it to the top of their game. But I have never needed a sports star or movie star. I have needed the men and women of our armed forces, law enforcement, emergency medical services doctors, nurses and fire fighters and they are my heroes.

Clap  Almost orginally posted the same exact thing Shame,  I just decided to make light of the situation instead.  I'm not sure how we got here over the decades but if movie stars, comedians, athletes(even golfersWink), politicians, and even mass murderers die they get wall to wall news coverage because that's important stuff to the public, yet the absolute essentials to life like those provided by farmers, carpenters, doctors, etc. and the protective services provided by police, fireman, military and EMT's get?? You guessed it, mum is the word when any of them die.   At least we have our priorities straight in this country.Wink

He started out right, but then turned into a first class jerk.  He's ruined HIS life and the lives of a few others.  I'm a golfer and I could care less if I ever hear his name again.  Not after all that he's done.  And that goes along with a LOT of other so called 'special' people.  They've put him on a pedestal that he doesn't deserve.
I don't feel sorry for him or any other drug addict that COULD have gotten help and gotten the monkey off their backs.  Too bad.....
Am I a cynic??  Hell yes, what about the person who had the talent, but never got the chance?

He is famous for two reasons.......first is he is one of the best to ever play the game. In his early days, he hit some shots that had anyone who knows anything just shaking their heads. A 220 yard cut shot from a fairway bunker that he hit inside 5 feet to a tough pin location tucked behind a greenside bunker. His first Masters win, he won by something like 13 strokes, which may have been an all time record. And that goes back a ways.....he was on Mike Douglas TV show at age 2......with Bob Hope.

In the early days, he towered about 120% above the rest of the field. Nobody else was close. All through grade school, high school, amateur years until he turned pro, and dominated everywhere.

Second reason.....that his father was black, making him half black in a sport that was 99% white made him a news media sensation. That he was good would have only mattered to golfers. That he was good and black was a force multiplier that made him a media sensation throughout society. Same thing with Obummer.

But then he started screwing up. Instead of dancing with what brung him, he kept trying to improve. He went through 4 or 5 swing doctors, each making changes, which screwed him up, and probably is what lead to the bad back. Also suspect he was taking steroids, which also didn't help. All that takes a toll.

Have only been to one big time golf event, and it is a spectacle. Corporate sponsors and fans with too much money chasing celebrity. Bottom line is the world they live in isn't reality. Maybe for them, but not really. Most simply cannot handle the money, fame and celebrity without crashing and burning.

Will be interesting to see what the black box says. My guess is driving way too fast......probably a habit of his. Problem that plagues a lot of folks these days.

Everyone has good points. Culture is wrong, cynical, don’t care, etc etc.

Thing is it’s nothing new, nothing has changed except there’s more media. Why is there more media? Because there’s money to be made in media, and people are motivated to make money.

Ever hear of Red Grange or Jim Thorpe? How about Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, or Ty Cobb? Mickey Mantle. How about Jackie Robinson? I fully realize there isn’t a single racist among us, but there are some out there and ol Jackie had a pretty rough time of things.

The first time Tiger played at the Masters, making the cut as an amateur, the first black member at Augusta had only been a few years before that. So he was a big deal, like it or not, and it’s just a fact of life whether we like it or care.

The color of his skin has NOTHING to do with it.  From everything I've seen, the only 'black privelage' flags ever associated with Tiger, were those flown by others.  It was a big deal to those who wanted to wave some sort of flag.  To sensible people, he was just a kid who was really, really, really good at golf.  When cornered by people who were TRYING to incide a race argument, Tiger took the same road as Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman:  Shoot it down.  Morgan's best line ever:  If you want RACISM to cease to exist, STOP TALKING ABOUT IT.

I'm not a golfer, my wife and her family are long-time experienced, and while I'm not great, I've proven that on a calm day, this uncultured troglodyte can swing a driver hard enough, and true enough to put it on a long-straight-fairway green with uncanny regularity, much to the chagrin of all those around.  Sometimes I can even putt, but know the detailed rules and undocumented social ettiquette I do not.  It's a game of stick-ball to me, and I don't give a hoot about the shoes or  dress code.

Call him a golf pro, call him a prodigy superstar, an addict, a philanderer, or even a quiet man, but don't call him a waver of race-card.  It is for the simple fact that he doesn't do that, that he is respected.  Don't think for a moment that there aren't other pro golfers out there that have tumultuous histories and home problems, that particular profession, and the insistance of paparazzi and public to want to saturate themselves into a person's life is one of the most misunderstood and poisonous punishments ever.  As the late Neil Peart wrote, living the limelight is a universal dream, yet there is no happiness to be found when imprisoned in a gilded cage.

Having been many times just-close-enough to see where I DON'T want to be, a word of advice for anyone ever in a position to meet someone famous:  Treat them like any other person- Ignore them.  be polite, don't call them by their name, even if you know it,  and don't tell them anything more than your first.  Don't ask them about their work, or life.  If they're crabby, walk away.   If they want to talk, let THEM pick the subject.  The really famous people I know, I met through hobbies, so we talk about HAM radio, old cars, metalworking, and fishing.

I feel sad that he's injured, I hope he recovers.  I'm injured too, recovering from knee surgery, probably much better off than he'll be, because I can work from home 'till they let me drive, then I'll be back to normal, with probably no measureable loss of capacity.  His job, not so much.

And for all the reason above, I feel sad for him.  He doesn't get to have a real life like you guys and I do.  Take a look at the lyrics to Lynrd Skynrd's "Don't ask me no questions", and imagine having a life where an army of crazy people are always in your face.

He wrecked his car.  Perhaps, at that moment, it wasn't such an accident.

It is great to find your talent earlier than latter. Along with the old saw, have a job you like, you never work a day in your life. But I am not coming up with any person that gained fame before having a real childhood that has handled it well. About a sure thing they will turn to a chemical to look for happiness, which is always disaster.

Not following Tiger at all I wish him and other child prodigies well in life. But I am not interested in following any of them. Maybe this is Gods way of taking pressure off Tiger, if he has permit damage to his leg's.   He is not letting his dad down if he is not the champion anymore.

Wink When I saw this topic was still current, Confused and only a few said they follow golf. LOL But we all get sucked into fame and fortune. Even if just to say it is over rated.LOL

Be very careful what you wish for.  I don't think you want the authorities coming and checking your vehicle whenever they wish, based on an anonymous tip,  checking speed, GPS, etc and writing you a ticket for speeding through school zones or wherever based on the black box info.  Red light camera's in MO are illegal for that very reason, no human involvement, what was stated to stop bad crashes at so called problem intersections became giving tickets to drivers who didn't make an absolute complete stop for the, "right turn on red," or stopping slightly in front of the white line.   Revenue from people running red lights fell dramatically because people adapt and quit running red lights so the infraction search expanded.  KCMO had to refund almost 2 years worth of fines.
Tiger was verrrry wrong, he could be ticketed for careless driving but opening the black box would be a Pandora effect.

Insurance company will have the  air bag 'black box ' data..are then able to NOT pay out on any insurance claims.... that's done all the time....
Also if uoi opt in for one of those 'aps' or OBDII boxes the car insurance people offer, you legally give away a LOT of personal data to ANYONE in the world who'll pay for it

We have Red light cameras, BIG money maker.. as OWNER of the vehicle HAS to pay the fine or you can't get your tags next year. BIG fine..but NO 'points'. They do help slow down SOME people, not all of course.
They'll net 10s of ,1000s down the road from me over the next 2 years as a slow speed sideroad WILL be the main road while 1/2mile of road is being upgraded.

He had the pedal BURIED to the floor..... Shammers could be right !

Woods was driving at an unsafe speed when he wrecked his vehicle in the Los Angeles area in February, authorities said Wednesday. Woods was driving between 84 and 87 mph when he first made impact, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said during a news conference. He was driving 75 mph when the vehicle hit a tree. The posted speed limit was 45 mph.

Authorities said there was no evidence of impairment when first responders arrived. Officials said Woods had no recollection of the wreck. Villanueva vigorously denied that authorities gave Woods special treatment in the case.

Los Angeles Sheriff’s Capt. James C. Powers said the black box in the vehicle revealed that Woods’ acceleration pedal percentage, which is the pressure applied to the accelerator pedal at the time of the crash, was at 99% at all of the areas of impact in the collision.

Funny is;  the people that start these posts and complain about what they are complaining about!  I think it just spreads the news even further.  I saw they had determined what  the cause was but didn't bother reading it.

I was between two cars going 90 or faster up the Eway one day.  That was fun, but I don't often do it and never if the Queen is with me!

Ultimately HE was the driver and is responsible, needs to be charged. Minimum of 'careless driving', though 'dangerous driving ' is probably the correct charge, as well as damaging private property.
If you'd done what he did, you'd have been charged......

I have been tempted to get into this discussion, but other than a big X2 to what JW said, I fear saying much more would only provide proof of how foolishly I spent my youth, and 'youth' is relative....I was younger yesterday than I am today, so that would be my youth.

I had a similar thought to what Shameless said page or so back. But since he is still with us I pray for him to get most of the monkeys off his back. I stated way back on this he has most likely had his dad on him (in his own mind, I know his dad is dead) that no matter how good he was he could of been better.

Many talented people crash and burn because of the pressure they feel from others. So be it drugs, dreams of ????, or the I am to important for you to be in my way , I hope he comes out of this a better person. Part of the better person would except the reasonability for the actions as well though.
