I am hoping this can remain civil and non political, even though politics plays a major role in the outcome. Hypothetically speaking, where do you think old polluting diesel and gas engines will be in say 20 years? My concern is, will fuel prices be crazy high because they want rid of these engines, or will it be low because of lowered demand. Will we be forced to turn over this old equipment to be destroyed for a pre set payment towards something newer and less polluting, or maybe fined, fee'd or taxed for keeping it around? It worries me as an enthusiast of old orange (or any color for that matter) tractors and old Mopars and other classic vehicles. Again, I am just asking where do you "think" we will be in 20+ years regardless of politics, and will our old junk be feasible to keep around and use in the long term.

Fuels in general will go up, lack of local National supplies(Pipelines and fracking Stopped) the Powers that are in office currently will see to it we get shafted for as much as they can grab for coffers until we curtail usage, and that WILL happen.

Been told by enough people in the industry that we will be at $4+/gallon before Summer, could see spikes to OVER $5/gal thru summer and as the fuels taxes do not materialize the Admin will resort to further beatings until capitulation gained, or otherwise.

Year and 10 months Congress will be set to flip again, BACK to Conservative so long as these people play this gambit.

My older brother managed a Mercedes and now a GM car dealership. His info from manufacturers says electric cars will be the only option in 20yrs.

Non-aviation gasoline use likely will become taxed massively to encourage persons not already sent to re-education camps to use non-fossil fuels, excluding natural gas.

BTW, ANY and ALL including Synthetic Lubricants are PETROLEUM Base Stock Originated.

Anyone dismisses Oil as far as Lubricants is UNEDUCATED as to where these materials come from.  Shut down Petroleum and there are ZERO lubricants in volume enough to lubricate existing machinery.

Crude will be hovering in the upper $70’s, lower $80’s within 2 years, barring any cataclysmic events.
The technology just is not in place for any drastic shift in how our transportation infrastructure. That is at least a100 years in the future.

I see a lot more public transportation. Heck look at how many things are delivered right to the house including groceries.
Got a coworker trying to get his 19 year old boy to learn to drive. The boy doesn’t want to. What the heck with that? From the time I was 10 til now I only thought of two things. Motors and girls.
Harley and the big ja4 jap bike makers can’t sell cruisers. Harley is working on electric motorcycles.
I myself can’t think of one modern luxury that I really like cept tacking with y’all on here.
Maybe lots of electric scooters n busses in cities.
I can’t see things changing much out here.

I think we'll be where we are now, prices will go up a lot, then mostly down, then up a wee bit more.. it's a 'game' to 'them' to squeeze as many coins out of your pocket into theirs...plain and simple, always has been.
Since there's billions of barrels of oil to be had under our feet here in Canada and USA,gas SHOULD be cheap but 'they' export it to make $$$$.

The wildcard factor will be a war, say in mideast. I don't see any electric tanks or planes....
What I'd like to see is a HUGE investment into nukes. Smaller ones..here and there.. they WOULD allow less oil/gas to be needed. Don't understand the lack of geothermal either .

IMO, the '30 (2030) models of anything will be a "hybrid/totally electric" propelled vehicle that in turn "should" lower the fossil fuel cost due to demand. The "BIG OIL/Lobbyists" will make sure that doesn't happen though Cry .

It can't happen overnight.. If you think all cars and light trucks will be electric in 20 years, how about gas motors in the trucks that are NEW 18 years from now ?  You have to keep gasoline available for another 20 years for those vehicles... I would think the "plan" is to get most cars to electric, most light trucks to electric, and shut down the coal fired power plants... You will still see a lot of natural gas plants, and i think nukes will make a come back 20 years from now... They will not stop pumping crude.. Used to make lube oil, synthetics, plastic toys, car parts, kerosene, probably paint thinners, etc.. The push will be to eliminate "most" gasoline engines in cars, lawnmower, light trucks, etc... You cant run a  500 HP - 40 ton truck or  bulldozer 12 hours a day on a battery.. at least not until WAY in the future.

A MN legislator came out strong against the so called green transportation here in MN . Said to travel from her home to State capitol during the winter instead of a 2 hour drive would be overnight as at 40% battery capacity in cold weather the trip would be beyond the range of any vehicle now in production . If she also ran the heater in the vehicle it might take 2 days to make the trip .
A move is to have people move into areas where mass transit along pre-determined routes for housing and either track or bus transport on public systems are the ONLY alternatives for the average family .
Then one has to think of how you will heat your dwelling as already areas ban wood burning, and oil will be taxed high enough to not afford to heat with , natural gas is a fossil fuel as is propane - electric from solar and wind can not peak generate in cold weather and no storage capacity is big enough let alone the grid to both produce electric for heating, charging transportation and use in every other use - unless some new form of energy is found - WE ARE DOOMED TO STUPIDITY OF GREENIES .
Already restrictions are placed on older diesel engines in limited use in Cal and it seems MN wants to adopt CARB standards now . This will outlaw both highway motor vehicles , farming, construction and other power users from even existing .

What does that PIT CRANE or large shovel run on - ELECTRIC - and it's not supplied by solar cells or wind mills . Try diesel generators , either turbines or reciprocating engine powered .
I suppose one could use nuclear power but reactors are banned now also . Hydropower but that is on the hit list also .
But then Coal is dead and no need to mine it anymore , all them coal miners and pipeline workers and roughnecks in oil fields need to find desk jobs in the finance field where they can buy and sell futures in electric, food, heat, and other things people will need to survive in the new green world .

If you guys are looking into something to invest in, invest big into the battery and electric motor sector.

You will see huge leaps and bounds in this area. We have an administration that thinks that we can operate anything that drives on batteries.

There is no way with the technology we have now days that you can make a long journey on a single charge. So your going to need to do one of two things either improve the batteries to last longer or two your going to need to make a rapid recharge system/ station (gas station model) that will charge your battery very quickly.

When one thinks back wood was the source of heat for many years and or in other areas animal dung .
Then came coal and in many areas peat (great grandfather owned large peat bogs in Germany) but the industrial revolution needed more power to advance , water wheels , wind for other uses but even that was not enough .
Petroleum became the big advancement in both manufacturing and travel, from ships, to full navies running on oil and not on sails . Air travel and automobiles expanded the world , not to mention trains and trucks which we still depend on today . But from steam power to diesel electric advances .
To think somehow everything is going to be electric without the use of fossil fuels with some new technology coming along that already individuals say is bad it a real stretch .
The place I worked was making prototype fuel cells for a couple different projects and these were based on the research done by Allis Chalmers in their development of the first Fuel Cell tractor . The process was bought by GM and they were trying to develop a cheaper method as the units we worked on were 280 titanium plates of about 1/8 inch thickness but them chemical machined with special porting and passages on both sides of plated - each plate being about 18" x 24" in size . these were then bonded or clamped into a unit where hydrogen passing through with H2O as the byproduct produced about 150 HP of usable electric .
To process the titanium metals special acid resistant machines were needed as working with a witches brew of Hydrofluoric Acid and proprietary chemicals made handling the process a real dangerous operation let alone treating any byproducts from the process.
One byproduct was titanium-oxide which could be used in paint but before the ramp up to full production the company I worked for sold out of business.

HF acid - kept calcium paste around all areas where in use , also milk works well as a first wash if you cant get to another means of dilution quick .
Spend many years working with it as we chemical etched all kinds of metals and glass .
Remember we got drums of it in for cleaning in a form called Railroad Cleaner - what they used it for unsure but we cleaned equipment with it as it would remove stains and carbon well off other materials , had some I put in a glass jug one night next day when i picked up the jug - it separated right at the level where liquid stopped and air met - severed it off perfectly around that line

BOY,,you got that right about HF acid. The refinery I worked at for 33 years has an Alkylation Unit that uses large volumes of Extremely dangerous Hydroflouric Acid as a catalyist to boost the octane of gasoline. It is extremely dangerous as on release to atmosphere,,,it forms an extremely dangerous  gas cloud. In that time I was there we had a few "releases" that caused several employees to lose body parts because it ATTACKS the bone untill you apply large amounts of calcium to slow down the chemical activity.

When was still working had a 'Greenie' was a Rad Chem Tech(Radiation Protection Worker) where would whine and complain of Nukes and Coal burners so asked WHY was he working there.  "Best Money he could make" was the answer, so asked why stayed if so evil, he would never answer just flipped me off all the time.  Was near his home one day, NOT Green at all, was close to dusk and he NOT married no kids, EVERY light in the house was on as appeared, Garage Door standing wide open(Cold day) car running/warming as he readied for work.  Asked him later why all lights on and he stated Always left them all on, no need to turn off as he was paid well enough to leave on.  What a typical Over Educated idiot.  He retired to Costa Rica, they did not accept his request for dual status citizen as was openly Gay(Brought his 'Buddy'), so moved to Ecuador.  Unhappy there with rolling blackouts and piddly poor health care so came back to states, died of colon cancer(dietary issue) and had refused to be 'Probed' colonoscopy inspected for years.

Fellow has a TESLA S and instead of 200 miles on a charge in cold he has a 40 mile range , if he leaves it plugged into his 110 volt charger it just warms the batteries but the battery drain also continues as 110 runs heater only not charger .
If he drives with heater on in car it's less miles so say use seat heater only and dress warm, needs a 220 volt charging station installed , brakes do not work when cold as regenerative brakes require warmth to work properly and in cold accidents happen when brakes fail , traction bad also in cold , tires need to be all at proper pressure or battery drains faster .
The future of electric cars in cold climate - (don't leave you home until it's warm )

their full idea of electric cars and charging off the grid is a short way to a fading future . The fuel cell and hydrogen power offers better advantages but is a fledgling idea that has not caught on as short sited see electric and batteries as the savior.
Separating hydrogen from water takes energy also and storing it as well as dispensing it is still a problem yet Iceland is using it for public transport and in government transportation.
Ships have went from oars, sails, coal and wood burning steam, petroleum steam piston engines to turbines , now turbines and electric motors using gas turbines to produce electric to drive propellers .
No easy answer yet the push is to outlaw one form of energy when the NEXT is not even proven yet and no matter the price as someone else will pay - YOU

Whatever Happened to the 42-Volt Car?

In a new column,  http://www.popularmechanics.com/search/pm/do/keywordSearch/searchString/Sat**day_Mechanic" rel="nofollow - PM's senior automotive editor  tears into the industry with a gripeand an answer.

It's been just about 10 years since the auto industry was abuzz with the impending transition of automotive electrical systems from 12 volts to 42 volts. Didn't happen. Isn't gonna. Stop holding your breath.

In the first place, why on earth would the car industry make such a global change, obsoleting trillions of dollars in 12-volt infrastructure and aftermarket accessories? Simple: Twelve wasn't cutting it anymore. Wiring harnesses were getting heavier and bulkier to run all the power accessories on board, such as heated seats and power windows. With 42 volts in the system, vehicles could use thinner-gauge wires and smaller motors because the higher voltage would mean reduced amperage--and amperage (or current) is what dictates the wire size, not the voltage.

The bundle of wires that go from the car into the driver's door is a good example: Some luxury cars had more than 60 wires in a bundle as thick as your wrist, making the bundle unwieldy to install and prone to damage. Switching to 42 volts, however, could shrink the bulk of the bundle by half.

So what went wrong here? The automotive industry found that switching off 42 volts wasn't that easy. Huh? A mechanical switch for, say, the window motor, has two metal contacts (well, a bunch, actually). When you press a switch, the two move into contact with each other and current flows to the motor. When you let go, they snap apart, interrupting the flow of electricity. But this doesn't happen instantaneously--the surface area of the metal contacts that touch doesn't go from something like 10 square millimeters to nothing in zero time. As the contacts move apart, the current density goes up in inverse proportion to the remaining area. And at the last instant of contact, the current density is high enough to melt and then vaporize the surface of the metal as a short electrical arc bridges the widening gap. Eventually, the contacts wear to the point that they don't work anymore. In a 12-volt system, this phenomenon was controlled by careful contact design and attention to the metallurgy of the contacts themselves. Forty-two volts draws a much longer, hotter arc, and vaporizes more metal.

Ah but the trace idea took over , using a PC board or flexible circuit on mallear substrate with copper trace or the idea of multi-signal to relay for power .
Place i worked did a Ford project where no wire all printed circuit few thousants thick CU trace on flexible backing , in fact was laminated sheeting so a multi layer flex carrying several different operations all fit onto a single strip - used a aluminum separator which could be exposed and chemical milled out easily leaving a copper bridge .

Better yet we have Can-Bus systems working almost as fast as fiber optics
Low power tiny wire uses discrete signals rather than a constant voltage where can operate multiple items off single wires
FO is next as have been explained is already being tested in class 8 trucks

re: Better yet we have Can-Bus systems working almost as fast as fiber optics

hahahahaha... I needed  a good laugh, thanks.
Wife's 2019 Nissan , has Canbus for the 3-5 puters onboard. PITA. The factory trained Nissan techs couldn't figure out WHY the car could run and be driven AFTER the key was turned off and place in the kitchen ! Several trips to them, more pITA.... I figured it out TOLD them what to do('no, that's not it') ,eventually they DID as I suggested, problem solved.
There's a huge underlying problem with Canbus, once you peel back the layers( like an onion),but 'they' keep adding layers and bodges....'bloatware'.
Wanna have a giggle? Pull a steering wheel off a new car,one with a zillion buttons for 'this and that' on it. You'll see LOTS of wires when you only need ONE to do all those jobs.
There's ZERO need for FO to control windows, door locks or USB ports...sigh, just a 'justify my job' deal.

I'd like to know what electrical engineer or supplier or whoever is talking these people into this. I don't think they could come up with this on their own.

What I am awaiting is a Huge Solar Flare to erupt, hit our little rock with a Massive level energy burst and ALL this techno geek crap to fry in place.  And YES that can happen.

Worst can happen is China explode a Neutron Weapon at 14,-30,000 feet over major metro areas, ALL electronics gear DIES, unresolvable.

So are the materials to construct and operate wind or solar.  Takes ENERGY and LUBRICANTS in all respects to produce then maintain them, lose one you have lost them all.

Wind Turbines blades are Fiberglass Epoxy produced, NON RECYCLABLE. As wear out REQUIRES hundreds of gallons, EACH BLADE, Petroleum products to produce the epoxy and Paints.  HUNDREDS of gallons of Lubrication Oils in EACH Nacelle and Synthetics RELY of Petroleum Base Stocks.  The Glass on Solar Cells is Mined Sand, refined and then produced into glass panels, NON RECYLCABLE once construct Solar Cell.  Exotic Minerals INSIDE Cell to make energy along with Silver Cadmium Arsenic Etc.

So ignorant in point of Petroleum in finite quantity.

YEP.... about a 100 year supply ..........within 50 years we will probably develop something else to replace MOST of it.... but NOT TODAY.

And NOT in 8-9 years.  Average Wind Farm takes two years to Site Prep and two additional to build, add to that are QUICKLY running out of optimal ground to site these.  LESS than 30% of Surface area USA is suitable for Wind Generation(Commercial) where MOST of that is already developed, less than 3/4 of US is suitable for Solar siting(Area, direction of Sun, time of Sunlight Year round) and less than 1/2 of that commercial rating.

Has been stated before, CANNOT Dump Fossil and swap to Renewables AS DO NOT EXIST in numbers quality or time to construct in time for need.  DOUBLE existing demand IF put a Electric Vehicle in Every OTHER household across the USA, NOT Feasible.  Reconstruct time/Money of Grid JUST to Supply Homes and rechargers DOES NOT ADD UP.

Wind Tubines running continuously last less than 15 years. Lithium for batteries is mined in Australia and Chile where they are already having environmental problems due to the mining.I did read an article about using Hemp for batteries but still in the development stage. I heard the man who helped develop the electric car for GM speak and he said Hydrogen Fuel Cells are the future.

WHY I am so old I remember PEAK COAL, PEAK OIL, the US will run out of oil by 1980 , gas lines when Jimmy C said turn down the heat and wear 2 sweaters .
Then with the wood shortage how will the industrial revolution survive without charcoal, without coke from coal, what happens with these new fangled iron horses and a tractor will never replace a good team of horses on a farm .
Problem now is a CHIP SHORTAGE and it's so bad CHINA says they can't produce enough for their own auto industry and are going to curtail exports ..
As it's in the MINUS numbers outside - electric vehicles can't make it back to charging stations in a 40 mile round trip .
No worry there is enough hot air from politicians rubbing against each other and flaring temps to create heat for at least 4 years . (OR TWO when Mid terms come up)

IS IT?  Seems to me they have been sayin this for YEARS!  And just like that, we figure out how to get gas outta shale.  Fact really is is that as demand increases, price goes up, as price goes up, so does the profitability of new techniques of getting gas, where we couldn't get it before!  That is, if the gubmint don't step in and ban everything that is proven to work!Wink

Still spewing ignorance I see.  Gas comes from shale when use FRACKING, now NA.  Oil and Gas fields are primarily US Federal Lands, also NA.  So look again.  Does NOT matter the price if that "Gubmint" says NO CAN GO THERE.

The "AVERAGE" Single Cycle 80mw CTG system consumes the same amount of CNG per SECOND as a common home with NG Heat and Hot water does PER YEAR, a Combined Cycle with a Steam Generator aid system reduces that by less than 5%.  I have seen the print outs as to consumption.  So as CTGs became Popular to replace Coal Steam system sites they also REQUIRE Volumes of CNG that would require a 60" Pipeline across the Atlantic ocean as are NOT ENOUGH CNG Tankers to supply enough volume.  Add to that the Price of Imported CNG is double NOW and will end up quadruple in short order where these little oil and gas consuming Dragons will sit unused without MASSIVE rate hikes.  Electricity is about to come into Strides of Rate Hikes due to fuels costs and expenses NOT SUBSIDIZED expanding at exponential rates.

The math is easy on CNG use.  HP is a relative value to fuels consumed BTU value, CNG has 1/5 the BTU value of Coal and just at 1/10 of petroleum.

NOW WAIT A SECOND !! The OP talked about diesel/gasoline powered ENGINES, I didn't realize these 2 items could be sucked out of the ground and put DIRECTLY into a fuel tank ??!!! Your putting WAY too many words in peoples' mouths dude WinkWink !!

who said put DIRECTLY into the gas tank........... the FACTS are , if you STOP DRILLING, STOP MINING, STOP PUMPING... you end up with LIMITED SUPPLY of EVERYTHING.. diesel, gas, nat gas, coal, oil, propane.... EVERYTHING.

A few years back i got put on hauling diesel fuel out to Sioux Falls SD to a peaking electric plant where they were running turbines as Natural Gas was curtailed in use .
Had 10 trucks hauling from Pine Bend Refinery in Rosemount MN to there , then when empty got to tank farm in Sioux Falls and reload to bring back to plant .
They were burning over 8,000 gallons a hour which amounted to a truck and 1/2 , run up to the 14 hours and take 10 off to start running again , then the tank farm there ran out as pipeline could not supply the volume needed and the fuel shipped down it needed to be separated as water slug was used between products in pipeline and it needed separation . So I got to head back and they dispatched 15 more tankers from Rosemount to keep plant running until the natural gas supply could catch up.
Odd when it's real cold the wind gets calm and also it seems the amount of sunlight decreases - but everyone want's more heat and electric for their own use .

Doesn't take much time to set the stage for a huge failure... You got one going right now.
and yes it is political, can't sidestep it when it is the direct cause and affect.
Just like mentioned before, look at California and see what is happening there.
No trucks before a certain year can come across their state line unless it meets their tier 3 emissions tests...
Some locals require you to dispose of your old engines or decommision them by burning holes in the engines and cutting frames... Don't matter to the dictators if you were just keeping something for historical purposes, they have zero tolorences.  And some places think they should have the ability to tax you for every cubic inch of all your engines... Don't think they can pass laws on you, many have already passed laws to rule and regulate what you can have and what you cannot have... You can not have any vehicles without current licenses on them... even in your storage sheds... ad some have only so many cars you can own...  Some places you can't have your vehicle sitting out behind your shed or within so many hundreds or thousands of feet of some road or water... and some places require to drain all fluids out of them before storing them.
All it takes is a few fools to pass a few laws and bye-bye to what freedoms you thought you had.
How fast could this happen? Depends on who is in power, and how fast the ink dries. It could be 30 or more years, or tomorrow... It could be your tractors, could be your fuels... or both.
You don't think so? Just look how fast the pipeline was shut down.  Bigger question is, will you have anything of your own when the time comes.Ermm

Precisely Steve.  Many of my family still live outside of Vandalia IL, where the Bunker Oil fields still produce only that during low barrel prices they shut down the pump jacks.  Nat Gas comes from Deep deposits, Gasoline and Diesel are in those same deposits as Crude Oil and the ONLY way to recover is fracking to get those materials to the well heads UNLESS Stupid enough to just buy from the Middle East.  Offshore US is abundant reserves of petroleum, now BANNED by Exec Order.  Deep Horizon managed to find a EXTREME Pressure reserve and failed so all offshore became Bad JUJU, not true but stigma hangs in the with the Garbage media types.

When electric shuts off and the Faux Media cannot express their ignorance to the masses they too will squawk and squall as to the misery presented by the Powers in Place.  Just their position in life.
