In the past 2 years, the local electric power company(AEP) has been replacing the 4 legged-spider looking towers with a single pole tower. These things are at a minimum 80 feet tall on a tapered post. How do they get such an animal "plumb" straight up  ??

the steel base is a flange on LARGER poles.. sets on 20 -40 studs with nuts on top and bottom ( buried in the concrete hole).. Adjust the nuts up and down to get flange level. The concrete base in the ground is probably 15- 20 ft deep for BIG pole... depending on the type of dirt. ............. smaller steel poles can be put in the ground just like wood. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

FreedGuy, don't know about power poles, but when the light house was moved they hung a plumb bob from top center hanging down to a circle on floor, plumb bob was maintained within the circle by adjusting jacks as light house moved. Possible to use one on inside of metal pole. Around here with wooden poles have seen the linemen use a string with a nut tied on one end, hold it out a arms length and sight pole. |

| the transmission lines around here are 3 different types, the single steel pole set in concrete, the spider web 4 legged type set/bolted to leaning pillars of concrete and bolted down, and the 2 creosoted wood pole types set in the ground with crushed rock surrounding them in the holes. |

| When I worked in the garage at UE we saw every version tower post and column. Saw lattice work towers on two legs with guide wires to anchors to four massive concrete piles with bolting cages set to extreme depth. Most wooden poles were set as noted by eye two or three crew with plumb sets at vantage points to ‘align’ the poles. Most steel column poles had a leveling head in base of column essentially a plate base with a welded beam pipe or bar set square the installers would set then the rest of the column survived from that. Corner sets were intentionally Leaned a few degrees away from the Pull of cable weight. |

| Tried those around here several years ago, do not see all that many as rot would start at the Glue Joints where water intrusion could gain access. Great for drier climates. |
