I bought a set of dual ring tire chains for the D17IV. I bought the chains a while back when the tractor had 18.4X28 on it, but since have put new 16.9X28 on it. I'm assuming I might need to remove a link or two on each side for the smaller tires. What bothers me on these is they have only one fold-over fastener on each side. The other side is just an open hook. I called tirechains.com, and they said that is how they are made.

Call me old fashioned, but all tractor chains I ever used had two fold over fasteners. Maybe this is some new trend, but I wouldn't think the open hook would be very secure. Anyone with experience with chains like this? Otherwise, I plan to find two more fold over type fasteners and add them in.

That is how all the chains we had for country trucks and graders were. Hook the open loop side good and snug, then use the latch side to draw it all really tight.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't claim to know all that much about these, except on the tractors as a kid, and on the Farmall 200 I usually use for snow plowing, the chains have locking fasteners on both side chains. I might just buy another couple and add them on, since that seems more secure to me.

My truck chains at work are made that way and they go down the road much faster than a tractor. The new ones I bought for the 8N last year came with only one fold over fastener and they haven't come off yet. I have spun them pretty good plowing snow and pulling logs in the woods.

If your tires aren't loaded. Jack them up and let the air out of them. Mount the chains and then put the air back in. It will make for a nice snug fit.
