i know ive been posting allot of questions recently, but i just wanna get this darn tractor working like it should,    anyways,   can you shift a CA on the fly? I.E double clutching?

i have done it before, but single clutching (Clutch in, try to ease into next gear and let clutch out to bring input up to the same speed as the output shaft, it works...   sometimes)

Pretty much any of the old tractors you can double clutch if you get good enough but with top gear being 11 mph there just isn't much point to it and it's hard to get enough momentum to even have time to justify double clutching.

yeah, i just want to be able to go from 3rd to 4th, because i have to slip the clutch for seemingly an eternity even at idle to get it up to speed without stalling,   and thats down a mild slope, up hill or towing, it aint happening

Grinding gears (operator abuse) is why many of these old tractors jump out of gear

-------------
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Dad: Why is the tractor jumping out of gear?
Me: Well you see uhhhh      there was a gopher attacking me, and uhhhhh       it broke it!

as you can see, it wouldnt work

I've got experience with CAs as a kid and with D12s these days.  Much of the time you have to double clutch to get them in gear when they are standing still.
Normally you can shift from 3rd to 4th on the go if there isn't much strain on the drive train.
Sometimes, moving along on a slight downgrade with no strain on the drive train I've been able to shift form 2nd to 3rd without clutching.

i have made the mistake of forgetting the shift pattern and going from 1st to 4th, little surprise if your not ready

You can do it for a while. If you keep doing it, you will soon have trouble keeping it in gear and then your wallet will get considerably thinner.

These old tractor transmissions are not synchronized and not designed to shift while moving.

If you can't take off in 4th gear on level ground without slipping the clutch a lot, better figure out what is wrong with the engine. Shifting on the fly with any letter series Allis will cost you dearly , eventually. Before the tooth rounder on the splines of the gears, and in the shifting collar goes all the way to the depth of the spline, you will be taking the whole rear end apart to replace both.
