Do any of you eat Spam? I haven't had any for at least 20 years for reasons that escape me. I had no issue with the taste or texture, perhaps the $$ played a roll? Just seems like Spam is really pushing their product with "mega" tv adds recently. Might bring a can home this weekend WinkWink.

Been probably 40 years since I had it. I didn’t hate it. I’d eat it if that’s what there was.

Not a regular meal with he kids when they were growing up, little pricey in my mind but we would get it when on sale.  Fry some pieces up in a pan, put them on a hot dog bun and a slice of KRAFT singles split in half on top. Kids loved it.

If you are travelling on I-90 near Austin, MN the SPAM Museum is a short distance off the interstate. Free admission.

Spam, IE Some Pieces ARE Meat, most are not.  The Glue that holds the loaf together is nothing more than meat collagen IE FAT.  Then the Greatest of them All, ALL the Spam that was EVER Made was done by 1947, the stuff is on cold dry storage around the globe in a endless supply!!

Personally HAD to eat that stuff in US of Army LONG ago, then a dear friend was coming to his 60th birthday at work, his main desire a Crew Feed on Spam.  LAST time any of that stuff crossed my lips and yes, it WAS Still as nasty as when I first had it, 2010.

Fried spam with taters and eggs for breakfast, spam sandwich for lunch. It is a bit expensive for scrap meat though.

I'm surprised it's considered "pricey". I mean, I had no clue because A) it's been 40 years and B) I don't do the grocery shopping. But still, surprises me, because I thought the whole point of it was cheap/scraps.

Been a while for me to. I guess 25 years or better. Nana used to fry it for us for breakfast sometimes. Pawpaw loved it then, as mentioned earlier, the sodium stopped him from being able to eat it. Never will forget that suckling sound it makes coming out of the can. Makes me want to shiver. The last fart leaving all those buttholes I guess

So I'm the lone dissenter?  Had it for breakfast this morning and we buy it by the case at Sam's. Probably not good for my health, but beats dying a slow death in a nursing home.

When kid was in USMC, stationed in Hawaii, we went to visit. Had a Spam fried rice Big Breakfast at McDonalds.

Lou, I have doubt about the sodium content of SPAM as it's a "preserved" product and am on the verge of being put on "blood pressure" meds myself (I blame the wife), but PLEASE tell us that you partake in a take-out pizza once in a while WinkWink

Sounds a little like a Garbage Plate from Frank's Diner in Kenosha.......as with the Monty Python skit, you could get a 3 meat plate with Spam, bacon and sausage.......and even a bloody mary to help wash it down. Or just a couple slices of Spam and eggs. Toilet facilities there are a bit iffy though, so I'd be careful with that one.

Also been to the Spam museum in Austin. Seem to recall there are at least 5 or 6 variations of Spam. Maybe more.

Here's an article about Spam;
https://www.kare11.com/section/coronavirus" rel="nofollow - Coronavirus

SPAM sales sizzle sky-high during pandemic

Hormel Foods' 2020 Q2 earnings for its grocery department (the one SPAM falls under) saw double digit growth.

AUSTIN, Minn. — Say what you will about SPAM. However, this Austin, Minn. grown pork product packaged neatly under a pull tab has always been about efficiency and affordability.

"It was created 83 years ago by our then president Jay Hormel who was looking for a way to provide a convenient affordable protein that could be used and shelf-stable as well," Sr. Brand Manager for Hormel Foods Grocery Products Brian Lillis said.

SPAM gained popularity as it was sent to soldiers all over the world and became a part of a WWII diet for many.

"As a lot of those soldiers and GI's came home after the war, they brought that back with them," Lillis said. "The popularity and the growth of using this affordable, canned meat protein was something that continued to grow over the last 80 years."

Lillis also added that a lot of Hormel products have been born during times of hardship.

"So much of the history of the number of our products were born out of those times where people were looking for that easy, affordable protein to have in homes," he said. "And we're seeing that now too, continue, not just with the SPAM brand, but across the number of Hormel Foods and canned items--chili, stew and hash."

And during our most recent time of hardship--the pandemic, sales have yet again been strong.

"The SPAM brand was on its way for a sixth consecutive year of record sales growth even before COVID-19 and the pandemic hit the U.S.," Lillis said.

According to Hormel Foods' Q2 earnings (ending in May), they reported a double-digit growth from SPAM products. So why?!

"I think the idea that you can have it in the pantry and ready for one of those meals that maybe you were quite prepared [for]," Lillis said. "And didn't know what you were going to have in a specific time and you look in the pantry and you've got SPAM in there."

Plus, a lot of SPAM's hype is about the nostalgia it carries with. Especially, if your family grew up on it. It definitely is the case for many international families.

"What we see is so many generations passing down their recipes of how they view SPAM," Lillis added. "Especially from East Asia and those different countries have grown up with it themselves and have been passing it down to their children and grandchildren."

As for why it is breaking records now--well, maybe it speaks to us wanting something we can always rely on, refrigerated or not.

"Some were probably going to stick it in the pantry and not use it again but it's been good to see people continuing to purchase," Lillis said. "The pandemic has continued for a number of months now, we're still continuing to by it at their stores or online. The method of purchase may have changed slightly, but they're still able to find the product and purchase them."

In more recent data, Hormel Foods representatives said in the 24 weeks leading up to the first week of September 2020, retail sales of SPAM have increased 28 percent.

22 !!! Ouch Embarrassed. Can Spam be eaten right out of it's container "cold" or does it need heated ?? Sadly, I've eaten my fair share of hot dogs right out of the package without heating them up OuchConfused.
