Baled hay last weekend with the 185. It was 98 degrees. I can't take that heat anymore. Trying to stay orange. Looking at 8010 with power director and an 8030 with power shift. I've never ran a PS before. Looks like the PD has more speeds.   Is there and advantage to the PS? I only do hay and shredding. The 8030 is 5k more with 1000 more hours. Both tractors have new paint and good tires.

Thanks Tim

The advantages of a PS are fairly straight forward. If you need (or would like) to change speeds often in the field under load, PS is the berries. If you road with a heavy load, PS is nice as with a PD you have to take off in road gear (low PD, but still a lug). At least for a 7000 series you do, my info may be dated.

If you can live with picking a gear and sticking with it for a long time, or don't mind stopping to shift, save your $5k if the power of the 8010 is enough. PS or PD are both very good transmissions in an Allis.

If you'd technically be replacing a 185, then get the 8010 as long as it's 2wd. You will wonder why you didn't by one sooner! An 8030 having a 426 will use more fuel.

I'd vote for the 8010.

Are you round baling or square?

I do 4x6 rounds. Picked up more ground so also looking to do 5x6 rounds. I love the 301 in my 185's. Just have to have A/C going forward.

8010 will do that job easily and save you fuel as said above. 301 is the best engine built by AC IMO.

Don't even think about an 8010 PD if you are going to get a 5x6 baler, I roll an average of about 1000 rolls a year. I use a pretty potent 8030 PS with a 5x6 roller, it's a wonderful hay tractor. Start off easy to get roll started then bump up to 4th gear and then on to 5th, when you need to slow down, just a tap to the clutch and back to 4th. If you need to slow even more just pull shift lever back a little further. A lot easier to go from forward and reverse also. I know I use lots of fuel, but to me it is well worth it! Just my 2cents

All 8000 series are nice tractors - but have heard the 301, which I luv dearly , are sluggish in an 8010, as they weight alot more than a 185 or 190 and the Ambac fuel system wasnt as good as than Roosa , just what ive heard and i have no experience with them

The 2wd were not sluggish, the mfd were.

I run a 7020 with a pd on the baler on hills doesn’t have any problem both of those tractors will work just fine

Dad used 200 with canopy to spray until we got a ps 8010. He said he wished he'd bought it years ago. We have 650gl sprayer, the 8010 handle's it fine but rpm's need to be kept above 2000 to keep it from being sluggish. Still doesn't use much fuel. We have a 7020 pd that we use on a brushhog in the spring, not as handy as a ps for moweing waterways, ditches and around buildings as our 8050 ps. If it we're me, I'd want a power-shift for your application too. Keep looking for an 8010 ps or go with the 8030. You won't be disappointed with the 8030. Either way, your gonna wish you'd done it sooner.

PS is a must if a loader is in it's future!    8010 fwa ps can be a little draggy.   i liked my PD for field work, the gear ratio's fit much better and the button on the floor allows one gear change up or down, with no stopping.  Talking about gear ratio's i loved; 7000 red belly with 3 speed auto.  just wish the 4 speed shifter hadn't been between my legs!

With a 5x6? Just curious. The weight difference is surprisingly HUGE. Do the math and see.

8030 I use a 8010 4x6 and like it but if I was looking at another 8000 series it would be 8030 P.S. period. Just my opinion. We are talking 38 year old tractors. If you find either with low hours ya better jump on it.

8030 2wd P/S is my round baling tractor and makes an awesome baling tractor.  Hesston 856 baler (5x6).  Have vermeer dealership in town and rented newer one several times.  Think 605M baler.  I ran that on 8030 and my White 105 and 105 seemed to be maxed out and sure pushed me around and pushed the temp guage higher.  8030 was much better tractor to handle that baler and i'm more hilly ground. Never had an 8010.   What do you use for a mower.  I run a vermeer disk mower. Power shift is awesome for that and can shift fast to slow real easy when coming to a ditch. Have a 7050 with P/D and rather have a P/S for baling.  I've used that one also in front of the baler, just prefer P/S. You'll like the 8030 cab, just make sure the A/C works good.

The effort required to de-clutch a Power Director clutch pedal all day long on a bailer would be enuff to make me buy the Power Shift.

I know I want a 2wd.  Not doing much tillage work.  Just light disking of Coastal Bermuda fields.  This 8030 in Arizona looks interesting.   My only concern it was dueled.  Don't know if it was pulled hard.  It was a Arizona fish and game tractor.  Looking at flying over and having a look but not excited about getting on a plane right now.  Just not much orange in Texas.  I've never done a sight unseen purchase. https://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/21829605/1985-allis-chalmers-8030" rel="nofollow - https://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/21829605/1985-allis-chalmers-8030

The power shifts are nice until they go bad and then you need a second mortgage to fix it. Just my opinion after seeing what my brothers cost him when the "big nut" holding it all together went bad. Cost almost as much as the tractor did.

The 426 engine and PS trans makes the better hay tractor. The low end power is provided by more displacement and you will notice this every time you stop and start forward motion. Big hay tools, high yields and high productivity expectations makes this a fact. You will never grind a gear switching from forward to reverse. The PS trans also shines on haulage work like moving bales spreading fertilizer or manure spreader work. I have a 7045 PD, a 7060 PS and a 190XT. If we put the 1034 stack wagon on the 190xt it gets along but the 7060 handles it like a breeze. The loaded wagon is over 12,000 and that is a lot to stop and start.  The 190xt with the hand clutch PD is neat to bale with especially on the older baler that wants the PTO shut off  (push in the clutch) to dump a bale.

I'm thinking they have had that 8030 on the lot since last year, maybe a lower offer for it would be in order.  The price seems too high for the hours, plus it's a 35 year old tractor.  I doubt if a green one of that vintage would bring that much.

Over the years I’ve had 2 PS and 2 PD.  We’ve been inside both PD and one needs a second repair.   The 8050 PS I bought with issues.   I argue the PD are a more trouble free option.  Organ donor Powershift was only $2200

I’d get the 8030. Whatever is does will be a walk in the park with it vs the smaller 301 in the 8010. The bigger tractors don’t burn much more fuel unless they’re worked hard.
