Hello Guys,

I bought an D14 awhile back.  The plan was to rebuild from the ground up.  Being that it is the only tractor on our homestead right now that has taken a back seat.  The PTO never worked on it when I bought it.  I am working on repairing it.  I have found the issue.  It looks like the bearing for the idler shaft failed and now the idler gear and another on that same shaft are just floating around above the PTO Gear.

My first question is, is it possible to replace this without completely tearing the whole tractor apart?  Not allot of room in there.  I have the PTO gear cover off as well as the hydrolic pump cover.

I was hopping for an easy fix but it is turning into a big job?

You will have to split the tractor between the transmission and the torque tube.
Removal of pump, power director shifter and pto drive gear is required.

That is not what I wanted to hear.  Pretty big job then.  Is there allot involved in the proceed of splitting?  I am assuming there is  few more gaskets required, but any other items needed?

Splitting at the transmission is not really that bad.  Just a bunch of small steps.  It can feel overwhelming at first, but think about each step that you are doing and always consider safety.
You might want to get a service manual - especially if you are planning to rebuild from the ground up some day.  It will have instructions on how to split.
If you are able to spin the PTO shaft by hand with the lever in any position, it is most likely a linkage issue.  It is very common for the roll pin to fall out of the linkage.  Replace with a grade 8 bolt and locking nut and you will be good to go.  Be sure to replace the O ring on the engagement lever while you are at it.  Also put new O rings on the hand clutch shaft while you are at it.
Here is a picture of the PTO linkage once you get it split.  Not much to it.
