What is the purpose of the rotating/flashing yellow beacon lights on tractor cabs? Seems like CIH tractors are more prominent with them but there are a "few" JCB machines that fly up and down the roads(dairy) Wink. Is this a factory installed fixture or an accessory ? I am aware that the newer/larger combine cabs have them but was under the impression that those had to do with the grain tank getting/being full ?

Some of the guys that live in Quebec can correct me, if I am wrong, but I think they are mandatory if the tractor is driven on the road in Quebec. License plates are mandatory , too.

It is something safety experts came up with to help big equipment to be seen. All newer tractors, combines, sprayers, and other ag equipment has them on it.

You know drivers can't see a 50 thousand lb tractor with a 100 ft harrow going down the road with flashers on so it must now have a yellow flashing light on top. Any of the newer equipment when you turn the light switch to road position. The hazards, headlights. Header end lights all come on. Now you have a beacon you can't turn off unless you pull the fuse. It's real annoying when I go out to the hanger and start every thing weekly at work. Looks like a disco with 6 pieces of equipment running all with the beacons flashing. We had to get the fire detection system modified it kept thinking we had a fire an you had to stand and hold the override till the fire dept arrived.

we had a car last year pass our tractor and equipment on a flat straight state rt. in the middle of the day.
The passing car hit and  killed an on coming motorcycle driver and the insurance company trying to come after us for not having enough lights. they came out and looked at our equipment and found that we  had more then the required lighting on our equipment.
We weren't to worried because we did nothing to cause the accident in the first place.

it would have made more sense for the motorcycle to be covered in flashing lights then our great big farm tractor.

people don't pay attention.

And now a lot of states do not require motor cycle riders to wear a helmet.

Thanks, but I would have thought the factory cab "flashers" would have sufficed ??

Too many stupid citiots!!!

Best thing lawmakers could do is make it illegal to pass farm equipment and follow by a minimum of 250ft vehicles that meets oncoming equipment should be forced to come to a complete stop as equipment passes.  First offense no license for a year.

Many of the dairy farms around here have bought land 20 miles from the home farm. I would hate to think about getting caught behind one of their tractors and have to follow for 20 miles.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I hated having cars following me when I was on the road with a tractor. I often pulled over and stopped, so they would go by.

Sounds a bit extreme, Around here way too many cars to not allow passing and far too many to have to pull over for tractors.

I live on a dirt road.  I'll pull over to the edge if there is a wider area and stop or I'll pull in one of the driveways.

Flashing lights are mandatory for tractor and slow traffic here in NZ and oversized panels for anything over 3.1 meters (10 feet) going on the road .motorbike and peddle bikes must have helmet if on the road too.we had a combine harvester contractor with yellow New Holland he got stopped by the cops and asked where his yellow oversized panels were his reply was the whole f..ken thing is yellow so he didn’t think he needed them .

I ride and drove truck, people do not see what they do not wish to see. No Helmet or vest or truck carried energy absorbing barricade will stop the idiots from killing Riders, other drivers, road or emergency workers or farmers. The problem is not the lack of lights or the lack of a helmet or the lack or flashing beacons on everything not signage or the presence of machines bigger than a house, it is the overly stupid the overly anxious the severely distracted and in a stupendous hurry to be somewhere else that really has no value but to be somewhere else.

Actually watched as a person got in their car drove ACROSS THE ROAD, bought what I suspect was a pack of smokes maybe a bottle of something then started back across the road and cut off a rider who died on scene. No need to have used a car, was a crosswalk not thirty feet away and pulled out in front of a bike with a headlamp on while running less than 45mph. I was sitting eating my lunch hauling grain when this all went down, was sad and stupid all at once.

Pulling over to the edge could get you sued for creating an illegal lane. It's happened in the past. Since then, when I drive on the road, the little I do anymore, I hog the whole lane and the public will just have to wait.

I was 12 years old driving a tractor, crossing the road to get to our yard and was hit by a car.  Little narrow front tractor.  Crazy memory....Dad was a policeman at the time, looked into the laws (of course he was a little spooked by the whole ordeal, first about my well being, then being sued and so forth), and he told us we should just drive in the lane like a vehicle.  Couple years later, I was driving our MF165 home from the ventilated engine mechanic, driving right in the lane how dad said.  Police car pulled up beside me, one from dad's department, motioned for me to pull over.  Should have seen the look on his face when I shook my head no!  Hahaha

These days,......I more less try to stay out of the way if possible, have lots of equipment now big enough I can't really get out of the way.  I try to at least stay to the right some so that they can see to pass.  When I get honked at, I'll either smile and wave, or stand up and flip 'em the bird.  Depends on how the day's been going at that point.

I flipped the bird once and found out it was the neighbor. Never did that again! I've been given the bird a few times. One time I knew who it was and the next time I saw him I confronted him, we were classmates in high school, he was really apologetic.

Hmmmm must be slipping, had to look up how to spell apologetic. LOL

When I drove my Gleaner A( a birthday present for another Allis lover)  down the 2 lane highway I took MY lane, even though there's a wide gravel shoulder. Loooooong line of traffic behind me, too bad. No lights but a new SMV sign .

I do the same. Too many times I’ve had to slam on the brakes to keep from hitting a mail box or the ditch. It’s hard to stop 40,000#.

While living overseas years ago came back for a family visit and brother's neighbor stopped in with used Ford FWD he just bought and it had lights all over it. Brother started teasing him that it must have been a county or state unit with revolving light on cab and additional flashers on cab, then we found the tag which showed it was an English built unit and was imported to the US.
Remember the first drive I took into the England countryside and you took it easy because of the narrow roads with stone fences on either side, sometimes not enough room to pass a "lorrie" coming from the other direction, even a little cab-over one ton and someone had to back up to a farmers gate to let the other guy pass.
They have been required overseas for decades and we came to that conclusion for safety way later.
Remember in the 70's when "fanny flag-ups" started showing up in US and states started recommending they be issued as standard on tractors.
Pretty much any implement has them these days and most have light kits as well.
If I come up on a SP mower/conditioner here in either direction, I give em' plenty of room with that giant header as they are usually hauling a$$.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.

Let me preface this by saying I have been riding motorcycles for 50 years (at least it will be 50 when it gets warm enough for me).
I have always said that anyone that rides a motorcycle with no helmet, doesn't have much to put in it.

Just seems odd that the original 4 corner cab flashers seemed to go "out of flavor" ??
And the JCB's in this area out run the flashing lights anyhow Wink. Man, they are fast down the road LOL !!

Hhere, in Ontario, a car MUST have working, operational 'daytime running lights (DRLs)' to pass the 'safety' to get tags then  AFTER that you can pull the fuse......kill the DRLs.
Let's see, spend millions making a LAW, to make it easier for oncoming traffic to see you THEN  say it's NOT really needed( can drive cars without DRL on).......

some daze I wonder......

Cars/trucks are one thing, WHY are the cab BEACON lights flashing in broad daylight in the middle of an 80 acre field pulling a chisel plow with NO other lights lit up on the tractor ??

Posted By: jaybmiller

why ? cause there's NO off switch ! for 'safety's sake' it's hardwired in......

meanwhile you can raise a daump trailer up, going down the highway......
YES, that happened here....

The corner flashers are good at night but don't show up on bright sunny days. The beacon lights can be seen anytime day or night.
When my beacon is on when I'm out in the middle of the field, it's because I plane forgot to shut it off.

the BTO's leave them on in the field so they can tell passing motorists..."hey look at my new machine"!
