| I have a D17 series 4 diesel with the original two battery tray in it yet. Was thinking of putting in one big cca 12 volt battery instead of two 6 volts like original. Can I just remove the diagonal brace that is in the middle of the tray. and will the tray support the single 12 volt battery, or should I get a tray from a gas tractor instead? I also considered using two 12 volt batteries that are the size that fits in a WD45 battery box, that way I wouldn't need to modify the original tray. What have any of you done for this in the past? Any advice? |

| From an expense stand point I would put 2 12V batteries in. The big batteries get rather spendy. The advantage of the 2 6V is longer crank times. |

Depends on how the two six volt batteries were connected. Connected to create 6 volt or connected to create 12? ------------- D14, D17, 5020, 612H, CASE 446 |

| DCAC,. My series 4 had 2 twelve volt batteries in it hooked up to put out 12 volts. The 2 six volt batteries were hooked up to put out 12 volts. I had very little trouble with the 2 twelve batteries. I used the large battery cables made for 6 volt batteries. The conversion was done be R&M equipment where I bought the tractor clear back in 1976. |

| Our D17 diesel has two 12 volt batteries in the original 6 volt trays and one cable from each battery to the starter solenoid to help carry the current. The double cable helped a lot on cranking speed. |

I did put 2 12 V batteries inna D-19D. Sure gave it a better chance at starting cold. You just have to wire them in parallel, steada series...

Better to buy premade cables unless you can solder and swage the ends properly. ANY mosture entering the cable will get the corrosion started, and that WILL come back to bite you....midWinter, freezing rain pelting down, bout midnight and 1/2 mile from house..... I've replaced so many homemade cables I can't count, owners bodging or saving a buck THEN they pay me to install the good cables.... ... BTW...I no longer have a mirror in my garage........
