I was just on Youtube and watched a man crank start his styled WC. He used a socket and 3/4 drive bar as a replacement for the AC crank handle.

Then it hit me. What If, a 1-1/2" hex nut had the threads drilled out and a cross hole drilled for the roll pin of the input shaft. That way, a crank handle with a ratchet built inside could be used. If the engine kicked back, the ratchet would not allow the crack handle to spin backward. I know that the crankshaft pulley was designed in a way that the input shaft would be pushed out if a kickback was to happen, but a broken arm is still feared.

Just a late night thought. Merry Christmas.

You been drinking? You got backwards thinking on the 'spit the crank out" feature.Only when it fires and runs does it reject the crank. I think your ratchet scenerio has the same flaw.....

Steve is right your idea will not prevent kick back.  sorry.

i don't see why it won't work. The crank kicks back not when the motor cranks and runs but when  the cylinder fires before the piston reaches the top of the cylinder and sends the motor backwards. The rachet would prevent the handle from flying bakcwards.

No, the guys are right, kicking back is the force you are turning against.      MACK

What happens when the engine fires and runs. Wouldn't the ratchet handle want to spin around?
As I recall I only had $300-$350 in adding a flywheel, ring gear, starter housing and starter to my unstyled WC a few years ago. Now I don't worry about a broken arm or running out of wind because of cranking by hand.

sounds like $350 for starter 'system' is a LOT cheaper than the meds let alone emergency visit for a 'miscrankin'.
Guess I'm gettin old but bones don't heal fater , the older you get !

I know how it feels , overhaul a wd that was on 6 volt ,starter would not turn it over , was timing the mag with the crank , mag fired and turned backwards  crank hit me on the back side of wrist ,hurt like h**l , after that pull start or 12 volt
