I am looking at a 816B Allis Chalmers backhoe. Were there any common problems with this model and what should I check out on this machine??
Thank You

frount axial pivot points. Is the hoe tight . Rear valve bank leaks. If the engin is high in hours look for head leaks. Altenators aren't real durable. Make sure the shuttle does not slip a lot. Drive it down the road with the cab doors open listen for rear end noises. Look for cracks where the loader attaches to the frame and make sure the out riggers don't leak oil. Check the fluids for signs be burnt. Check the engin oil for anti freeze. Run it up to full RPM. If it misses, might be a injector pump or injector problem. Watch the smoke comming out of the stack if it is white there might be low compresion or a cyliner leak. ( some of the guys on this site might be better help with the exhust color better than I can). Hours and opertors that use the shuttle as a brake are the machines worst enemy. Gave $5300 for the one, I own. Before I bought it, it had a new transmision, rebuilt motor, new rearend, One side plantary replaced. and a few altenators. Has been a good starting machine with lots of power. But the waight (16K) and not being FWD causes it to get stuck easly in sand (If diggin down) when when using the loader.
